I have a butcher block counter top and want to spruce up my kitchen. Suggestions for attractive, usable and not toooooooooo expensive replacements?
Opinions on counter tops
If you want to replace existing butcher block with new, Crosscut Lumber down on 1st Ave (just south of Spokane) sells good quality ones that hold up well. My husband made us a custom size butcher block for a very large odd shaped kitchen island and used their butcher block counters as starting material for that. (Quite the project!). anyway, it is holding up really well and looks great after 2 years of heavy use. I am not sure, but you could also try Ikea, but I don't think their butcher block will hold up as well. If you are thinking of stone, I would look into tile. You can get large granite tiles and install for much cheaper than slab granite. If you are thinking of slab counters, we did soapstone on our other counters and love them. Completely heat and solvent resistant. If you have a small area, it is not that bad cost-wise. We had ours done by Expert Marble and Granite (Highland Park). You could also look into one of the pre finished granite shops as their prices are quite a bit less than a custom job. Downside is selection is limited. You could also look into the Chinese cabinet places in sodo. No idea on quality of their counters though. Good luck. I have not regretted a cent of what we have put into remodeling our kitchen, especially if you do some of the work yourself and save money on it like we did. If you can save money in some areas you can splurge a bit on materials that will hold up and be more cost effective in the long run.
