   Taproot School, a independent, project-based K-5, will be branching off from Community School of West Seattle and opening a separate school in West Seattle in September 2013. There will be several open houses in the upcoming months. The first one will be next weekend. Here are the details:

   What: Taproot School Open House
   When: Saturday November 10th, 10am-2pm
   Where: Community School of West Seattle (our current location) 9450 22nd Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98106
   Who: Adults only please

   Additional Open House Dates Are:
   Saturday, December 15th, 10am-2pm
   Saturday, January 19th, 10am-2pm
   Saturday, February 9th, 10am-2pm

   CSWS is really excited for Michelle and Terry to take this next step. Michelle started this program 8 years ago. She has nurtured and developed it every step of the way-this is the next logical step for them. And West Seattle is the perfect community for a small school like this. We look forward to watching their growth and welcoming them as another educational option for families in and around our community.

   Although we are thrilled by our current school, I was intrigued by the description of the school and clicked through to read more about it. I was disappointed not to find any clear information on your approach to teaching the skills of math and reading. Traditional or reform approach to math? Whole language, phonics, balanced literacy approach to reading?Fantastic job describing project-based and emergent learning. I would love to see more specifics on your website. Sounds like a great place!

   Hello Friends of Taproot School,

   As we move from our eight years as the K-2 Program at CSWS, into our own space as a K-5 program, our curriculum will stay the same.

   We will teach reading through whole language, phonics, reading to kids, kids reading to us, kids reading to each other, playing with blends, site words, punctuation, reading by writing, handwriting and on...

   Our math is experiential, manipulative based, written math, mental math, math games and everyone learns to play chess.

   We don't have a prescribed curriculum for everyone because everyone learns differently. Our low ratio and connection with our students allows for us to creatively meet them where they are.

   Yes, the website is a work in progress that we are creating ourselves. And while we love to talk pedagogy, to really find out how we teach, come to one of our open house dates and schedule an observation.

   The first open house was a huge success with so many excited families. We are thrilled to be able to continue our work as Taproot School.
