On Street Parking Regulations

    Hello there,

I was wondering if anyone can answer as question for me. I live near White Center. The street in from on of my house has no sidewalks, the street just stops and people's front yards begin. I've gotten tickets while parked on my front yard, next to, but on the street. Can anyone tell me where I can find the code that tells me where exactly my property starts in relation to the road. I don't think I should be getting tickets while parked on private property.

  2. Well if you're actually in White Center, you probably have to consult King County statutes, since it's not technically Seattle.

Here's Seattle DOT's parking regulation site. Not sure if you'll find what you're looking for there.

What was the infraction listed on the ticket, and what police agency cited you?

Do you have a plat map of the properties on your block or even the site/lot description which describes the lot measurements? Maybe that would help you too if you own the property? If you don't own the property, ask your landlord where his property ends on the street side.

But, I will say that yesterday, Tuesday, I saw a Seattle metermaid going down Barton heading west off 16th. That is in Seattle city limits and is not considered White Center but is Westwood to the west of 16th and Highland Park to the east of 16th. There are a number of streets running north/south without sidewalks in that area of South Delridge and further west in Arbor Heights, by the way. It was the first time I have ever seen a metermaid around there in nine years of living in the area.

  4. I'm going to guess that you were parking in what is technically considered the "sidewalk". If you park in such a way that blocks the invisible sidewalk, you get hit with a ticket. It doesn't make sense, but that's the rule.
