No pups for sale? Cities ban pet shops

One city experienced a 20% plus rise in adoptions from shelters and a 35% reduction in euthanasia of shelter animals. Until there are no dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, etc., in our shelters and rescue groups, let's ban pet shops from selling these animals.

After 30+ years volunteering in the animal rescue and advocacy world, for just one day it would be wonderful to hear 'Wow! we don't have any animals in our shelters to adopt out--they all have homes!)

Thanks for sharing. Now... how can we make it happen here?

This is a great idea and one that might be easier to implement than the breeding ban some of us (including then-councilman Ron Sims) worked on years ago. I still think it's reasonable to require pet owners to neuter their animals, but unfortunately the measure was defeated. A pet store ban would be a fine place to start. Many pet stores in Seattle already offer shelter pets for adoption.

How? We start writing letters to and talking with our various city councils and mayors; King County Council and our Executive; our legislators and Governor. It we really want this...we have to push hard for it because the businesses that sell aniamls are going to push back hard.

Also, have a polite 'elevator' talk with any pet store that 'sell's' animals as opposed to offerring cats, dogs, etc. for adoption. Petco use to have cats for adoption on site, but not anymore. Ask them why? What it would take to get them back?

Talk to people about adopting...and not shopping.

Cheers. Remember-it's hip to be snipped!

  5. if people saw where that puppy in the window came from they would be far less likely to spend the kind of money that pet stores are charging for "purebred" pets.

I am all for this ban... putting backyard breeders out of business is a good thing for our four legged.. and two legged friends.

I am also for breeder licensing, regulation and inspection.

This is eye opening. We are so used to shelters being there that we are almost blase' about it. That is sad. ;(

    Good idea.

eta. I like Next to Nature's solution: bring in shelter animals TO the store. Brilliant.

There was a piece in the news yesterday about county animal care costs being passed on to cities in response to the budget crisis. Licensing fees were discussed, among other things. This might be a good time to re-introduce the idea of mandatory neutering and required licensing for any and all breeding. A combination of approaches, including the pet store ban, might bring some resolution to this issue. The slaughter has to stop.
