Nickelsville's ladies building a shelter

  1. the past two days, the ladies at Nickelsville have been building a permanent shelter.

In two days they constructed a base and three walls including a window on the back wall.

They have done this without power tools in the midst of our current heat wave.

They haven't run out of steam, but they have run out of materials...

To put a roof and a locking door on this structure I am told that they need:

    6 sheets half inch plywood
    2 2x4x12
    7 2x4x8
    2 2x6x12
    7 2x6x10
and roofing material (tar paper, shingles..)

The ladies are really proud of what they have accomplished.. i can't enter the camp without one of them grabbing me by the hand to take me back to see "their" house... but they are going to need a little help to finish the job.

I am asking you for that help.

I realize that un-needed building materials are unlikely to be one of those things you have stuck out in the garage... but if several people throw a dollar or two or more in the pot... we should be able to collect enough to supply them with the materials to finish this project.

I will throw in the first $100, negotiate with Home Depot for the best deal they will give me for these supplies and ensure that the money is spent on the building supplies for this project.

can we double or triple my donation?
I would really love to see the ladies finish this structure.

Nothing creates ownership like building something with your own hands.

JoB.. don't be lifting or overdoing it. We'll never have that lunch date if you do too much.

JoB, I think I have some shingles down in the garage. I will look tomorrow. Money is tight for me until the 5th. I know I have some wood shake shingles down in the basement if they want those they can have them also.

  6. Thanks JoB and Celeste.

Jiggers, we all keep an eagle eye on Jo to make sure she doesn't over-overdo it.

We simply just can't seem to prevent her from merely over doing it on occasion! ;-)

Yeah ladies!! We can be strong when we join together to accomplish something. Glad to see the great response. I can't do much to help but do what I can to help at Nicklesville every Saturday with a friend and neighbor. Every little bit helps. Wish I could do more.

  11. thanks Kootch!

I think i will be able to do pick-up with the assistance of a body at Nickelsville...
and would be glad to pick up the stray piece of plywood and 2x4 here and there as well.

They already have a second foundation ready to begin another structure as soon as they accumulate materials. Building materials of any kind won't be wasted.

just let me know. i have already agreed to do some pickup on tuesday night.

It would be good to get them materials as soon as possible so they can get back to work before the rain hits.

  12. a special thanks to the anonymous donor who filled the back of my pickup with plywood, flooring, trim, siding, shingles, nails, caulk and items too numerous to mention tonight.

We had plenty of help unloading that load...
in fact.. it looked a lot like Christmas in camp tonight.

    the ladies thank you.

  15. Can some one please tell me what this structure is for?

I do know they need food, as per the 3 women who work for me.

    Posted 8 months ago #
  16. I believe the structure the women are building is a housing unit for two people ... It has a locking door and front and back windows for air circulation.

the units are built in such a way that they can be broken down into 6 flat panels and moved on a flatbed truck should that become necessary.

Considering the fact that my neighbor was red tagged and ticketed for building a playhouse in his back yard for his kids without a permit, I hope this has been taken into account or looked in to.

    Posted 8 months ago #
  18. velo_nut...

was your neighbor's playhouse a collapsible temporary structure?

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to be obtuse... just a warning.

But to answer your question... In his mind it wasn't :-)

    Posted 8 months ago #
  20. I am also not trying not to disrespectful, but how long is this camp allowed to be there? Well at least they can be broken down easy enough to be taken some where else.

    These are all temporary structures?

Velo_nut I don't think the camp falls under the same rules as to what your neighbor had to go threw. I could be wrong too. (Plus that sucks your neighbor got into trouble.)

he should have settled for an airstream ;)

    Hammerhead..

i think the bigger question is when will the city council get off their duffs and make a decision one way or another?

    ******

    but back to the structures..
    to answer the larger question...
these structures supposedly just within allowable guidelines fro non-permitted structures..
