Nickelsville Needs-June 19th Edition

  1. Hey everyone, here's our latest list, (some of it ongoing needs):

    Men's and women's pant,s shirts shoes, underwear.
Kid's stuff, one nice item to have for the kid's would be a swingset, or something similar that we could put on the "back 40" to help them work off their energy. Right now they are running around in the common area and near the tents, so there is a concern about them hurting themselves on a tent pole or something, or crashing into a tent, hurting themselves/damaging the tent.

Tents; 8X8, 8X10, and family size. I couldn't pinpoint actual dimensions for family size, but the guy I talked to mentioned it would depend on the size of any given family that may move in.

    Tarps.

Hand sanitizer; individual size that people can carry on themselves.

Mrs. Munchkin22 has an updated list on clothing/shoe needs and sizes for the one family that is currently there.

    Thanks!

Could you set up a net? Badminton? Volleyball?

    Posted 11 months ago #
  3. Are you all thinking of putting in a veggie garden? I have seeds I could donate if you are.

    Posted 11 months ago #
  4. angelescrest, I'll ask the guy that suggested the swingset. I'm not sure how much space (yeah, I know there's a lot! ;-) ) could be dedicated, but I don't think a badminton set-up would take up too much.

ghar72, We have a garden underway!

I'm sure that our Gardenmaster Ion (pronounce Yon) would be thrilled at any seed, (and perhaps container, since we can't dig in the area), donations.

    Thanks!

  5. Got an affirmative on badminton/volleyball!

  6. mike..consider this suggestion for gardening. If you can get donations for some old dresser drawers, they can be used as raised beds. They can be lined up in an orderly fashion, filled with dirt, planted with seeds or plants, labelled, with maybe a different crop in each drawer..and..voila..a garden.

Great idea on the dresser drawers, Jan. I'd be careful of anything toxic on them/or line'em with something less toxic.

Does someone have an old net hanging around? I have two extra raquets and perhaps a volleyball.

Hey MIWS (and others) -- do you have clear plastic storage boxes (with lids) or some other way to keep books and puzzles dry? Mike and Zack are doing some work for me tomorrow and I have some wood and other things that may help with garden beds.

JoB, they'll be here most of the day, if you want to stop by and consult about gahening possiblities.

    Thanks!

  9. Jan, I like that dresser drawer idea! I'll mention it to Ion.

Charla, the storage boxes would be very welcome, not only for the kids stuff, but for general camp usage.

  10. I suppose you could line dresser drawers with gardening plastic to keep moisture in and rot (and other less palatable stuff) out :)

I have found a gently used swingset on Craig's List for 90.00 its in Normandy Park. Is this to much to pay? Is anyone interested in contributing to getting this swingset? I am almost out of money (been on unemployment for a while) and don't start back to work until July 5th. Let me know.

    Celeste...I'll kick in $10.00.
You know how to get a hold of me.

    Posted 11 months ago #
  13. celeste..
when i first read your post i thought that i am doing all i can and i can't afford to fund a swingset too...
but funietoo showed me how wrong i am.
    i'll kick in $10.00 too.

if we can find 5 more people willing to kick in $10..
or 10 more people willing to kick in $5..
those kids can have a swingset.
if not this one.. then another.

25 people publicly contributed to the pot luck last sunday.
who knows how many others did so silently.
the power of cyber connections can be powerful indeed..

you know where to find me too :)

HI all, thank you for all your support. I have emailed the person saying that I have the money and what days and times work for her to pick up the swing set. As soon as I hear back from her I will post and let you know so we can arrange pick up and drop off at Nicklesville.

Hi all, I have commitments for 80.00 of the 90.00 that I need. I have been in contact with the seller and I have asked if we can pick up on Saturday. Thank You all for your help in getting this done for Nicklesville.

Jo, we forgot to transfer my 10 dollars (to you.) If you're going to have the truck Saturday maybe I can arrange transfer TO NV of some stuff that was too big for my car yesterday.

AND -- stay tuned; I'm on the track of a really hot donation that falls under the category "fun."

    Posted 11 months ago #
  25. linda, yes, we should currently have enough room for a croquet set. (another great idea!)

Just met with Celeste17 and dropped off swingset money. When my daughter heard about the swingset she kicked in $10 of her hard earned babysitting money in addition to a box full of age appropriate books. She made her father awfully proud today.

2 Much Whine, special thanks to your daughter. It's great to see young people with a sense of compassion and sharing.

    Mike/NV:

Do you have a need for a charcoal grill to use for cooking? My husband upgraded to a new one and wanted to see if you guys would need something like that before giving it away to someone else. Please let me know. If so, I can drop it off at some point. If not, we just plan on giving it away.

    Posted 11 months ago #
  31. Seattle_Rose, yes, I think another one would be nice. We have the two gas ones already, as well at least one or two charcoal.

However, it looks like we may be having to restrict our gas grill/propane usage, as we are simply using up the propane too quickly.

We have our fire pits as well, but that is dependent upon having available firewood.

    Thanks!

I have a lot of firewood from a plum tree taken down a year ago. Is it burnable now?

    Posted 11 months ago #
  33. angelescrest, my uneducated guess would be yes, since it's had plenty of time to dry out (as best as it can in rainy Seattle! ;-) )

If anyone has a truck and wants to swing by...if not I can load them in the wagon this weekend.

    Posted 11 months ago #
  35. angelescrest...

can i assume that if you are contemplating loading the wood into a wagon that it is already cut into manageable lengths?

    maybe we can coordinate.

i will have the pickup on sat morning to go get the swingset...
i can't load wood.. but the pickup will haul at least as much as your wagon.

Shall I email you my address?
I have badminton raquets and a net as well. I also have extra cans of proteiny-powder that go into my daughte's special formula. It mixes up well, and I have given extra to the AIDS center.
    Hmmm. Thinkin' protein-shake here...

A zillion thanks to munchkins for loading and delivering the wood, etc., and hauling it to NV. More angels in our midst!

    Posted 11 months ago #
  49. thanks to everyone who contributed to the swingset.

Celeste got the money to me yesterday and a couple of people from Nickelsville and I picked it up today.

We had a great conversation with the young mom who was giving it up.

The money went to cover moving expenses for a mom who has been forced to downsize. She was really needed the money or she would have been happy to donate it to the kids at Nickelsville.

This one was a win win.

it will be a couple of days before it is installed since we need to get new tie-downs and put something between the ground and bark dust.

but there were a lot of smiles in camp as it was carried in.
