    Good evening all,

I saw someone post on this blog and thought it may be a good idea if I do the same. My name is Mike, I'm a recent transplant from NY, and five days into living in West Seattle I am growing to love it here. I've seen Alki Beach and the surrounding areas, I traveled to Univ. of Washington yesterday to test the bus system, and for a kid that is used to living in the country, that was an adventure!

I would like to get involved in the community, volunteering or getting involved in group activities. I love Ultimate Frisbee and am looking for groups that play in the area. Do you guys have any suggestions on where I should look to get involved?

I'm also looking for a good place to watch a Mariner game when I can't get to Safeco. I love baseball, and although I am a Met fan, I would like to follow the hometown team and stay up to date.

Thank you all, I have looked through the website and it is probably going to be one of my best resources for adjusting to Seattle.

    Sincerely,
    Mike

  2. Hey Mike-

    Welcome!

Check out http://www.discnw.org/play/pickup.html if you're looking for pickup Ultimate games. I play in the 12:30 game Friday at Interbay and there is a Sunday/Wed game at 43rd and Wallingford (at 12:30 and 6:30). I wish there were some games closer to West Seattle...

Be sure to say hi if you show up to any of the above games!

  3. Make sure you take opportunity to mention the superiority of NYC to Seattle whenever possible, preferably using the phrase, "Well, in New York..."

Of course, I am kidding. You know this, but in this part of the country we tell people we are kidding just to make super sure we don't hurt any feelings!

Welcome to town. Moved here from the midwest about four years ago and can't imagine moving back east for anything.

    Westside is the bestside.

  4. Frisbee: Longstanding listing in the WSB Events calendar, where we list EVERYTHING that is on the schedule, from a restaurant opening to a community meeting to recurring events like this:

JUNE 12: West Seattle Family Ultimate Frisbee – Monthly 2nd Sunday at 11 am, Hiawatha Playfield, SE corner

P.S. Welcome and glad you found WSB.

Wow, thanks for the Frisbee leads, somethings to check out for sure.

@Odroku: I have actually only been to NYC a few times, I lived in central NY just outside of Syracuse. Although I love visiting NYC, it's not a place I would live. Seattle on the other hand ...

    Thanks again!

  6. welcome to West Seattle. I have a friend who lives in Liverpool, NY....you'll like winter here a little more if you're not too crazy about snow - lol. You'll get used to the gray :)

A few tips to help you acclimate:

    - don't catcall at single women gardening
    - experienced traffic engineers have determined that the speed limit on the Admiral Way hill is too slow
    - babies are not welcome to empty beer bottles at Buddha Ruska
    - feel free to rant about the lack of cupcakes at Cupcake Royale- you're not the only one who thinks so
    - if you let your unleashed dog run on the beach, you will be photographed and have your picture put online

    Enjoy the hood!

  8. Hi Mike

Welcome from a fellow newcomer. I'm the one who posted. I'm also looking to make new friends and connections. I've been in West Seattle for 5 weeks and I am loving it. I walked Alki during the ultra low tide on Saturday and it was awesome. I am also a fellow New Yorker, although I lived in Chicago for many years before moving out here.

  9. Hi Maplesyrup

from another newcomer - great tips. A couple of questions. I was noticing a lot of unleashed dogs on the beach and wondering about that. Who takes the pictures.

Does Royale run out of cupcakes (haven't been there yet)

    What is Buddha Ruska.

I am really enjoying this blog. Wren

    What is

  10. Hi Wren & Mike,

I am also a fellow New Yorker from the Bronx! West Seattle is the most awesome place in WA to put down roots. The people here in general, are so nice and the community on this blog are beyond enjoyable!

I am a Mets fan too, Buddha Ruska is the yummiest thai restaurant around, Cupcake Royal (not my favorite) does have a smaller selection later in the day at times. Yellowleaf Cupcake in Belltown has hands down the best cupcakes in the world (imo), and the closest you will get to actual NY pizza is Gianonnis in Westwood soooo yum! All personal preferences to be sure, but through an ex-NY'ers tinted glasses.

As far as the WSB you will find yourself checking here for everything. It's the best source for news, entertainment, opinion I have ever come across anywhere they do an outstanding job!

    Welcome welcome welcome!!!

  11. Welcome Mike. I moved here in November and love every minute of it (except Sat nights down here on the waterfront).
I hope you like to eat out, because every place mentioned on the blog has very good food. I have gained 5 pounds, and an inch in the waistline, and I exercise like crazy.
One word of warning, beware the Buddha Ruska. Their food is so good, I now refuse to eat Thai anywhere else.

@JanS: I'll take the gray over 6 feet of snow!

@Maple: I just read something about the cat-calling, thanks for the tip

@Wren: I know the feeling trying to get connections, this is like me going to college all over again, except MUCH further away this time

I am loving WSB and all it has to offer, this is my one-stop-shop for everything West Seattle. I'm loving it so far! Looks like now I'm going to have to start eating Thai food!
