Neighbors against the California Ave Re-Zone

  1. We are a group of neighbors organizing against the rezoning of California Ave in the Admiral Neighborhood.
Please visit our Facebook page for more info and to join the efforts if you agree that the re-zone is not a positive choice for our neighborhood.

    Thanks!

Please fix your link or run it through http://tinyurl.com

    I must say, I don't admire you're initial attitude.

    I'm with charla...
i would think that discussion of the issue would be in your best interests...
education is essential to both consensus and agreement
it doens't look much like you are interested in either... just acceptance:(

LisaM, I think your post was reasonable and concise. There is nothing unreasonable or unaccepting about having your own opinion and advocating for a cause you believe in. You made it clear that readers could follow your link and make up their own minds based on the information found there. But wouldn't any grownup already know that without a specific invitation? The opportunity for discussion was implicit, and an overt plea for mass approval unnecessary.

  6. anonyme...

it seems the comment charla and i reacted to was edited out of the original post...

too bad i didn't notice sooner... i would have removed my comment.. but it has been a rough week.

JoB, thanks for the clarification. I kept reading and re-reading the original post and could not for the life of me figure out what had spurred such a reaction. It would have been helpful if LisaM had responded to your suggestion instead of just editing out the offensive bits...

  8. It's been a rough week for me too, hopefully you all checked out the FB page..
My original post said that I would not be responding to opinions here on this forum (thinking the purpose was to drive those interested to the facebook page). When I realized that this was taken in a negative way, I edited the post.
Now it's all convoluted and I am afraid the original message has been taken over to be about me and not the issue.
I just hope people will educate and inform themselves about the 3-year process (so far) that private real estate developers have been paying fee and politicing to push through and the potential impact on our neighborhood.
The facebook page has information, comments and ways to get involved, so please, everyone, take the time to at least learn the issue and decide if you want to join the fight or not.
Thanks all, sorry for the confusion,
    Lisa

  9. Lisa..

thanks for reminding us of the original issue..

sorry i didn't respond faster when you cleaned your post up... i believe strongly in rewarding those who respond positively to public input.

that.. in itself.. might be the strongest reason for those who live in the Admiral District to check out your face page.

  10. Hi. I was confused by the original responses, too, and am glad to see this was sorted out. I hope people will check out the FB page. As Lisa said, it is an attempt by neighbors to gather, get educated, and educate - discussion, an important part of that process, is welcome and happening.

It has been almost three years since the one informational meeting held about this in West Seattle by the city, so there is a lot to learn (in a short time during the summer...).

  11. For anyone interested in this issue, I have finally finished an almost-a-week-in-progress story re: where it all stands, including a pre-hearing conference Tuesday on an appeal filed by a group that I believe is separate from the group that's created the FB page. It's link-rich for anyone who wants to follow trails to online documents in the case, zoning-process explanation, the history dating back to when this was first announced (actually it wasn't really announced - we found it first just popping up in the twice-weekly Land Use Information Bulletin one November day in 2007), etc. The key date ahead remains the August 18th Hearing Examiner public hearing, which is at the Municipal Tower downtown; that also is the deadline for comments, pro, con, or otherwise.

  12. You used tinyurl to obscure/obfuscate a facebook page?

Care to indicate why? Even on the fb page I don't see any reasoning. Did you move to CA ave thinking it was a quiet residential street? In that area I am pretty sure both property values as well as tax valuation go up when commercial properties nearby are upgraded or developed. If your property is different perhaps you could tell us why?

Ken, she used TinyURL at the request of another commenter, charlabob.
I didn't understand why, either. TinyURL is only useful or "necessary" in applications in which limited characters are needed, such as Facebook itself or Twitter. TinyURL on a website? I get suspicious of the person's intent, since as you said, Tiny makes the actual website URL difficult to impossible to discern until the link has been clicked.

charlabob here -- i suggested a shorter URL so people might actually get to the damned web page. i didn't realize it would violate some weird made-up rule.

the OP had a long url with a non-functional link.

Lisa, my apologies for making your introduction to the forums so difficult.

There is probably a rational argument in favor of the California Avenue zoning change -- accusing someone of nefarious behavior because they used a tinurl link is just strange.

OR perhaps I'm a probusiness mole, trying to lure unsuspecting forumites to incorrect conclusions.

Jeez Louise--those classic words "get a life" leap to mind.

Over and out -- so many conspiracies to foment, so little time.

  15. Ken, the opposition is not being raised against upgrading or developing the area. It's to oppose upzoning the area to a new zone that allows bigger/taller buildings and more disruptive businesses. They are two different issues, not directly comparable.

Re: tiny url. Ken, TinyURL doesn't obscure anything; when you use it the whole URL is revealed, plus Lisa was inviting people to the Facebook page, not trying to hide it. Thanks for the humor charlabob! My guess is since you just mentioned tiny urls to Lisa she didn't know you can name them, i.e., TinyURL.com/NAME. Tiny urls are particularly useful in marketing when, say, instead of sending an email with a gigantic link, or printing a long link on a marketing piece, you can use a tiny url with a name embedded. Great stuff - tiny urls!

Okay, I'm giggling over all this tinyURL talk but in a tragicomic way. Good lord. Lisa, thank you so much for sharing the information, and for your patience and diplomacy in hanging in there to get the message across. This is a really important issue with ramifications beyond the neighborhood it would impact if the upzone were approved. Our community may benefit from watching closely over this process, studying and debating the real issues, and ensuring that the right thing is done for the good of all involved. I oppose the rezone proposal and commend your efforts.

  16. all well and good... But where is the reasoning?

What specific nefarious businesses will be allowed? Latte hawking Strippers? Morticians in mime costumes? Rollerskating chupacabra detailers? It ain't a discussion without some info on either side.

Can someone link to the last coherent explanation seen on the issue?

I know how bit.ly and tiny url work and they both can be and often are used to obfuscate the first stage of a redirect. Some good, some evil. I use add on's that allow me to interpret and test the link, but they are not default on most browsers.

  17. Ken..
you will never have to worry about that with my links... i can't figure out how to use them so mine will always drag on and on and on .... :(

Yes, with TinyURL the entire URL is revealed... after one clicks on it. That's the point; once clicked, if the site is malicious, it's too late to go back. I still stand by the statement that TinyURL is only necessary when limited characters are necessary. Otherwise, as long as it's a hyperlink, I don't care how long the link's text is.

  19. Hi. A reminder that the Hearing Examiner meeting (mentioned by WSB above in post #11) is Wed. August 18th. Please consider attending! Please also consider sending letters opposing the upzone. They must be received Aug. 18, by the close of the Hearing Examiner's meeting.

The Facebook page for "Neighbors Against the California Ave. Rezone" includes info to assist with drafting letters. To learn more, or to join the Facebook group, write: <againstupzoning@gmail.com>
