Need you guys' help/ideas

  1. Good morning ...

The Forum's been serving as a de-facto mini-classifieds section for a while, but we've been looking all along for the right software that would enable a bonafide classifieds section. Why the he** should Craigslist have all the fun, when tens of thousands of West Seattleites are here already?

So our wonderful development guru is in final stages and I'm asking for suggestions on what categories are must-haves. There are some obvious ones - like the ones we have already done here in the forums - but there are also things we'd never think of but YOU use CL etc. to seek all the time.

Category suggestions requested! Thank you! (And if for any crazy reason there's one you wouldn't want to post publicly but want to suggest, please feel free to e-mail editor@westseattleblog.com )

And no, "Cartoon Network Jobs Spam" will NOT be a category :) - Tracy

  2. Hmmm - well lately I've been posting to the "Community" category of CL under Musicians, as in "Seeking musicians for a community orchestra". It's for a group that _rehearses_ outside of West Seattle but occasionally plays in West Seattle. Would there be a category that covers that?
Other than that it'd be "Stuff for Sale", which may or may not be sub-categorized into things like "Antiques", "Furniture" and "Baby Stuff" - oh and a "For Free" category.

  3. I would love to see a "for rent" and/or "rental wanted" type of section for individuals (perhaps not big buildings that are simply advertising, but for individual landlords who have a house/apartment to rent, or someone who's looking for a place).

A "barter" section might be nice. How about a "locally made" section to enable small, local endeavors to get the word out? Of course we'd also need a section for Nigerian Prince Money Laundering opportunities. . . . .OK, maybe not.

Yes, a "for rent" & "rental wanted" section would be great. But, anyone with a residential rental should be allowed to post, not just individual landlords. Perhaps do separate sections for residential v. commercial.

  6. There's been several Forum "get togethers", or at least proposed ones since the Forum's inception, so how about a Marco Polo.....ummmmm......"Get Together" section?

Oh, and a Charity/Cause section, (one combined, or two separate) for such organizations as FCAT, F3, and such. Also for specific people/families in need of some assistance, or a particular item such as a car, or replacement household goods, clothing and such, in case of fire?

People always seem to be in need of event spaces.

  8. Its more a technical category but it would be nice to be able to see all ads that were posted in the last day or since last visit. Thanks!

My organizational reptile brain is having a ball right now thinking of the possibilities BUT....

I would love to see an "Announcements / Obituaries" section. In a close-knit community, when you don't see a local person for a while, you always wonder, and it would be great for people getting married, or for Charity organizations to announce an event...etc.

How about a section for garage sales?

  11. West Seattle Rideshare/Carpools/Vanpools.

    Gas prices are going up.

  12. My two cents: furniture/furnishings. Used furniture gets a bum rap but some of my most favorite pieces are used. Most garage sales are bad places to buy furniture because most folks have one or two items, and descriptors commonly used are for larger classes of items. Thanks for doing this. CL may be great but I rather find stuff locally both for assurance and not having to drive to someplace way off the beaten path like Ballard or Magnolia. :-)

  13. I agree with Sue and AlkiKmac on the rentals. I'm trying to find a new place to live and wading through the crappy commercial big apartment offerings on Craigslist is frustrating.

  14. I love the recommendation section and have found some fabulous tradesfolk from this. But I'm sure we've all noticed the repeat requests...Anyone know a good plumber, electrician, carpenter, etc, etc. It'd be great if stock categories for recs could be preset. Not sure if that's feasible, but always think of it when I see the repeats. Then if you have a good experience with someone, you could post a rave/referral there.

I like the idea of breaking out plumbers, electricians, house cleaners etc. into categories.

Maybe also a section for people trying to buy/sell tickets to events they arent able to attend - concerts/plays etc...

I wonder if it is more or less useful to have a very granular offering of categories. my sense is less granular is more useful.

I use CL to offer household things for free. I would much rather focus on West Seattle even though people from anywhere can log in, read and respond.

A section for one-time or short term employment opportunites, ie: you're moving and need extra muscle or helping an older person with a chore they may no longer be able to handle.

A "Looking For" section. You never know who might be looking for something you may have.

A Hobbies or Interests section if you needed someone to walk with, ride bikes, knit, bookclub, etc.

I'm thinking we definitely need a 'Casual Encounters' section ... think of the possibilities:

    - chupacabra of indeterminate age and gender (even the vet is afraid to look) seeks encounter with anything edible; age and race not important (come to think of it, neither is gender.)

    - 3 y/o German Shepard seeks new owner who won't leave me tied to a parking meter outside a store or let me run free in inappropriate places. Have own feed dish and water bowl to bring to relationship. Please have good leash and map (or GPS) showing location of off-street parks. Women preferred as I can scare the cr*p out of creepy guys in Lincoln Park.

    - Seek woman with high-speed Internet connection near Morgan Junction. Must like smell of McDonalds french fries. True test of compatability will be how fast my pages load.

    you get the idea ...

  23. not meaning to step on any toes...but do we really need a "single adults" kinda thing? We have to remember that it's all about local...and remember who is going to have the honor of moderating the classifieds. Just a thought...

    I would love:

    * Lessons/Instruction Offered (E.g. for crafts or language or HTML, etc.)
    * Contract or Short-Term Employment (E.g. moving help, editing/writing gig, etc.)
    * Rideshare/Carpools

  25. FWIW "personals" is one market that's already saturated. Not only is there CL, there's also the Stranger, the Weekly ... But keep the ideas coming. In another day or so we'll have to settle on the first round of categories. Have to start fairly manageably. Thanks!
