I\'m desperate for some help in my yard and am hoping to find someone to help me weed and spread mulch at a reasonable hourly rate. I just can\'t afford any of the estimates I\'ve gotten for others to do the whole job. A long time ago I saw a flyer for SSCC horticulture students for hire--does anyone know anything about this?

    Thanks for your help.

I\'ve tried to track down students to hire at SSCC, but I\'ve never had anyone respond to any notice I\'ve put up in the Garden Center. I always have assumed that someone else found the workers before me. But, I DID get a response and a good worker when I posted a job notice in the Student Employment Office on Campus.

I\'ve always thought about just calling the Horticulture Department and just asking them directly versus putting a small note up on the bulletin board in the Garden Center, but I haven\'t needed to lately. This was a couple of years ago anyway, so I\'m not exactly certain what their current policy is about posting for help wanted.

Also, I\'ve called THe Millionaire Club downtown and hired workers (a minimum of four hours time is required) to do basic weeding, yard work. Never had a problem with any of them. I;ve used the Millionaire\'s Club ALOT.

Call the Day Labor # at 728-5627 on M-F between 6:30-2:30 and on Sat. 6:30-10. When I know I\'ve got at least four hours of work for a guy, I will call them - usually pay a $9/hr rate (in cash - no checks) for yard work. But, I always give them extra money for lunch and a fat tip.

Also, Edmonds Community College has a horticulture program and I\'ve gotten referrals from that Department as well - for designers who live here in West Seattle. Maybe talk to them too?

    Good luck with those weeds!

I recommend Al Semple--we just hired him to dig all the grass and weeds out of our parking strip, and he did a fantastic job. Very hard-working and nice guy. He also weeds, mows lawns, just about anything you need. He\'s here in West Seattle--in fact, he grew up here! Contact him at almco@aol.com.

josie2006 - We are currently renting and our landlord has made arrangements for a gardener to come clean up our yard. When this gardener does come, I will ask about what you need and post the estimate here for you.

  10. Clean Air Lawn Care is based out of West Seattle and offers environmentally friendly lawn care service by using only battery and electric equipment that is powered by renewable energy sources. Did you know that the EPA estimates that as much as 10% of air pollution comes from small 2-stroke engines that most gas powered lawn equipment uses (not to mention the noise pollution). Clean Air rates are in line with other lawn care services and the work is professional. The number is 206-941-4180.

Thru August we have reduced 2289 lbs of air pollution or the equivalent of 70,158 vehicle miles reduce.

I do yardwork, light painting, cleaning, etc. for about a half-dozen homes, mostly in the West Seattle area. I travel by foot and bus, so tools/materials must be provided. I charge $12 an hour. Call me any time. Dan: 206-420-2286.

I hired Al Semple to do some weeding at my house and I was disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were to high but I guess when I pay someone $25/hr for weeding I expect it will be done well. It wasn't and he did not resolve the issue when I expressed my displeasure. I would not recommend Al Semple for weeding. Save yourself some money and hire someone from the Millionaire Club!

    afrikando -

Millionaire's Club (day labor line) is 728-5627. You need to call the day before to schedule M-F 6:30-2:30 and Saturday 6:30-10. I THINK they still have those hours. The number I have for them is 728-5627.

The workers arrive, almost always by bus at their appointed start time. They are to show you a MC workslip which will have your name and address on it and they will also have identification on them as well. Ask to see both pieces.

From that point on, they are your employee. If you want to hire a particular person again, you are free to directly hire without the Millionaire Club coordinating the hire if you want to do that. I have never done that, but I have called and requested the same worker be sent and if they can do that, they will.

Casa Latina is another agency I have used. You schedule workers the same way but you must call between 6-11 AM the day before for M-F, or 7-12 on Sat. - call the morning of the work day before. However, when the workers are delivered by the Casa Latina driver, you must pay $5 to the driver.

The folks at both day labor offices will tell you all you need to know when you call. Casa Latina's number is 229-2272, or 905-3201. I have two numbers for them and I have no idea why :).

Anywho, at the end of the work day, you must pay them cash.

  16. ive got problems with my back and cant do much yard work anymore. ive used the millionaires club and have always had a good experience. they are hard working, dont ask for a lot and are always happy to have the work. we have called a number of the millionaire club people back time and time again. i try to make sure they are taken good care of by providing enough fluids, snacks and opportunities to cool off when the heat of the day comes. weve all had bad bosses so try to be kind to the people you hire!

I have also used the Millionaire Club and was more than satisfied. My employee worked incredibly hard. While you are not required to pick up or drop off downtown, after 6+ hours of hard labor he was very happy when I offered to drive him downtown so that he didn't have to take as many buses to get home.
Please note, I did try to book online, but my request did not register. When they didn't call me Sat. a.m. to confirm (which the website says they will do) I called and they immediately sent a worker for me. As a result I recommend calling vs doing an online request. Also, I got the impression that they have workers show up for last-minute jobs, and then send them home at 10am.

I hired Isaac (Lackyboy206) to do some yard work for us today. He's been great. Showed up on time, has worked hard. He'll be back tomorrow to finish the job. Nice young man.
