   I broke a 15-year old udon-type bowl the other week and have been searching for a replacement since. It was glazed porcelain and light for it's size. Have checked Uwajomiaya (sp), MM, John Henry, Thriftway, BB&B, Pier One, and others but I cannot locate a replacement. It was about 9 inches wide, 4.5-inches deep. While the original was brown I could go with other colors.
   -
   Does anyone in WSB-land have a lead for a bowl like this? It was big enough for a large soup or salad, with vertical sides so it didn't slop stuff out. I have a similar bowl from Bruning Pottery but it is twice as heavy and not as pleasing. After exhausting the likely sources I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

   I am assuming you have checked the oriental stores in White Center... I think i have seen actual pottery there.

   i would also check Pike Place Market potters on the weekend... i can think of several that have displayed bowls that would be appropriate for Udon.

   i am as interested in the answers you get to this one as you..
   I have a real soft spot in my heart for pottery.

   JayDee, I've been searching for a noodle bowl as well, and it's not as easy as you'd think! Uwajimaya was a washout, which came as a surprise. Kobo in the I.D. has some nice bowls, but very expensive. I'll be following this thread to see if any new ideas turn up.

   Wow...seems to be an unmet need. I saw some nice thin bowls at Kobo but expensive and too delicate. I checked White Center this weekend. Will explore the links provided. Thanks all...who knew?

   You might find the right bowl at Cost Plus World Market, I'm always pleasantly surprised at their interesting selection and great prices.

   You might consider contacting the Art Department at South Seattle Community College. They do have a Ceramics/Pottery element to their arts program.

   I would think one of the students in the art department would love to have a chance to either recreate your udon bowls or to be able to create ones inspired by their own vision to accompany your current ones. Good local opportunity on many levels.

   I'm also looking for this kind of tableware. JoB, Can you suggest specific stores in While Center? Looking for dishes, I went to the one that used to be in the mini mall with the liquor store and it was gone.That was so discouraging, I gave up. But I'm thinking there must be some hidden treasures in that type of shop.

    babalou, if you mean the store is gone, as opposed to the bowl being gone, the store has relocated to their own newly built shopping center to the south, on the corner of 15th & 100th.

    I checked WC last weekend and while I found Udon bowls, none were quite right. I checked out the store MIWS mentioned and they had some good bowls but wrong glaze design. But they were pretty light and <$10. But the other stores were heavy or plastic. I am thinking of Fremont Sunday Market next...I will report back if I am successful.

    Agree that it may be worthwhile to check out Etsy. I've found that most sellers will make custom items if you give them the specifications.

    You might want to try Daiso Japan in Westlake Center (lower Metro level). While I don't know the exact bowls you're looking for, that store seems to have a little bit of everything in it and I've seen various dishes there before. Pretty inexpensive overall as well.

    I tried 99 Market at the Great Wall Mall and the typical two choices of plastic (not) or thick walled clay bowls. I will try Etsy -- The other West Seattle potters didn't seem to have the selection or access to determine if they would do this. Since the ViaDoom is looming I shall be restricted in my destinations to the North (all but south would seem to be fubared then.) I work downtown so can check out Daiso. Thanks. Like I said if I find my bowl I will inform WSB.

    Cost Plus Market (downtown and Tukwila) have GREAT Asian inspired bowls, plates, etc. I'd try there first. I've always had great luck finding housewares at either store, Tukwila just has a lot more parking (free) and selection.

    Pier One (Westwood Village) sometimes has stuff like that, but is way more hit and miss.

    Uwajimaya isn't the only cool Asian market in the ID, did you walk into some of the little shops on the side streets? There is also the Japanese equivalent of a 99 cent store right across the street from Uwajimaya you might try. Otherwise, I'd hunt on Etsy, or Amazon, or search "udon bowls" on Google.

    Etsy may have the right bowl. It is referred to as a "Man Bowl" but the measurements fit pretty close. Amazon was a waste (no big bowls, too many targets). I like the idea of Etsy where I can commune one on one with the seller and it is straight forward. Pier one was a close miss, and I tried a couple of the other shops in the ID but they focused mostly on cheap/plastic or "heavy".

    Thanks to all the West Seattlites who have helped on the quest. I will let you know if Cost Plus, Etsy or the Fremont Sunday Market did the trick.
