Need help with rides for cancer patient - urgently.

  1. I'm looking for some help from our community.

My father has been battling Pancreatic Cancer for a year now. The type he has is the most aggressive form of cancer known to medicine, and has only a 15% one year survival rate, and a 5% 5-year survival rate. Last week was the first anniversary of his diagnosis, which in and of itself is amazing. 85% of the people diagnosed the day he was, are dead now. Amazingly, his tumor appears to be dead and he's very much alive.

However, they need to do a 5-week round of ultra-heavy chemo+radiation to ensure that every last cancer cell is dead. Getting to this point and getting through the 5 week protocol is a HUGE deal. People who make it to this protocol and get through the "5 weeks of sheer hell" as his doctor calls it, have about a 65% chance of remission. REMISSION. From Pancreatic Cancer. It's nearly unheard-of.

The protocol is a 24/7 chemo pump and daily radiation. He has to travel from home in Everett, to Virginia Mason on First Hill for 5-10 minutes of radiation therapy, and back home to Everett, every single weekday for 5 weeks. My mom has vacation time the last two weeks, so that's covered. American Cancer Society committed to helping with rides, but only one volunteer called, and she can do one day a week. The Access/DART transportation system needs a 2-hour pickup window, turning a 1.5 hour round trip into potentially 5-6 hours. For someone as sick as he will be with this treatment, it's not even close to reasonable.

We desperately need help getting him to/from treatment for the next 3 weeks. Tomorrow (Monday 7/12) is covered. Tuesdays and Thursdays are covered. We need help Wednesdays and Fridays for sure, and possibly Mondays. If anyone is willing to volunteer, even for a one-way ride, we'd be incredibly grateful.

Please email me at aimgrrrl at gmail dot com and I'll put you in touch with my mom.

  2. I don't have a car, so can't offer ride assistance, but will bump this up.

I hope your Dad gets the rides he needs, Aim.

Hi Aim. I'm so sorry to hear about your father. Unfortunately, I work during the day, but if someone has a car I'd be happy to donate gas money if they're home and have the time to take him. Best of luck to you and your family.

I've heard about this grueling pancreatic protocol at VM, and know that it can offer a lot of hope for those who are able to withstand the regimen. Not very many docs admit that they will be taking a patient "to hell and back", so that speaks volumes. I wish the very best for your Dad.

Since it is such a difficult experience, have either you or your Mom thought about taking the entire time off of work so that he can have someone with him before and after treatments? I know it's virtually impossible for most people to do this, for financial reasons, but maybe there is a way...

If your last resort is the Access/DART transportation, they are able to schedule his pickup in advance for 30 days. Hopefully with advanced notice there won't be a lengthy wait time on each side of the journey.

Best wishes to you and your father. You are a wonderfully supportive daughter!

Aim, is it OK to cross-post this request? I'm unable to do the driving but I know some folks in the north end who might be able and willing.

Also, if your family hasn't connected with them yet, Cancer Lifeline has some wonderful supportive services available to cancer patients and their families. Not necessarily practical day to day support, but emotional support that is also very necessary when faced with a situation like this. http://www.cancerlifeline.org/

Wishing your dad the very best.

What about those unemployed people out there? Maybe for those of us that can't donate time, we can donate money to pay an unemployed person an hourly salary and cover gas to provide rides. Two birds with one stone. We could send paypal payments to Aim who could coordinate paying the driver. Now all we need is an unemployed person to volunteer and donations.

Does your company offer EAP as a benefit? I know coworkers at the 'bux who've received invaluable help through contacting EAP and receiving a variety of information and resources that may help during this time. My thoughts are with you and your family Aim.

  12. Aim, if you haven't seen my e-mail yet, I crossposted this to FB and have had a few comments there, plus a possible offer, so please let me know in e-mail how to put any more such folks in touch...

  13. Thank you all so much for your kind words and offers and suggestions!! I'll address them more directly tomorrow, as I've got a splitting headache and just can't look at the screen any longer.

But to answer the big ones, yes I know about PCAN - went to the symposium in April. We've all exhausted vacation time during the last year, though my mom is taking the first two weeks of august so she can be home during the final leg of this treatment. We've got this week covered, and I think we now have enough volunteers to cover the two weeks following, so I think we'll be ok.

Thank you all again. More tomorrow. I've got to go crawl into bed :-)

  14. What time of day? Though I live in WS, I work in Everett and have to go to Swedish at 4:00 everyday as well. I could pick him up after work and I would be willing to drive him home afterwards on the Weds and Fridays.

  15. CeeBee, his appts are in the afternoons, so that might be really helpful. Will you email my mom, Elaine, directly at ehandersen at verizon dot net? She's in charge of the spreadsheet that's tracking who is doing what and when. Thank you!!!

Thank you, again, to everyone who has offered. I truly appreciate it, and when he's recovered you're all invited to the party. In WS, not Everett ;->

Have you tried Hopelink transportation? I heard they do that sort of thing for patients living outside King County..

I am able to do some, but not all, of the dates that still need volunteer drivers. Please see if you can help!
