I found a fabulous sandwich place in Burien today - Hey Paison! on 152nd. I was sitting there with the pastrami juice dripping down my fingers and calculating how to get this place to open up in my neighborhood, Morgan Junction. I said as much to the owner as I left, and he's actually interested in opening another location, and WS might be one of his choices. But his preliminary inquires aren't turning up any open locations. I said I'd post to see what help all you food fanatics could offer - any ideas for him?

It occurs to me to give more details. The space he has now had 6 small tables, the deli case & counter and the stove for cheesesteaks etc. cooking. Sandwich variety was east coast hoagies, website with pics of size and menu is http://www.heypaison.com

Perhaps a hostile takeover of the Jack in the Crack on Admiral? Anyone with info down toward Morgan?
Posted 2 years ago # -
how about the place on Calif Ave that used to be Ovio and then Beato...it's not Morgan junction, but should be ample room....
I would welcome this guy to West Seattle with open arms...I've heard his Philly Cheesesteaks are authentic and yummy...

Chuck & Sallie's on Cali!
Posted 2 years ago # -
I've been dying for a great cheesesteak close to home.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yardvark, I've also heard that they have excellent cannoli, made by the owner's mom...yeah, would be nice to have them around...
Posted 2 years ago # -
I second the old Beato location. Or the Ama Ama empty space.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Isn't there a few empty spaces in Westwood Village? Not sure if that's the type of 'store front' they want or not though.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I would assume that both the Beato and Ama Ama spots are quite pricey, given location and size. Also, they're both for sale, not rent - do you know whether the owner would prefer owning or renting his space?
I'd think the Westwood Village lead is most promising. There are also several open storefronts in live/work buildings between Morgan and Alaska Junctions, but I don't know if those locations would get enough traffic.
Chuck & Sally's location would be perfect, but that building appears to be a complete tear-down. The proximity to BPP is perfect, though!Posted 2 years ago # -
i thought the Ama Ama space was taken by the folks who brought us the Bamboo Grill.
Posted 2 years ago # -
the old Dante's footwear space next to Zatz bagel, California and Admiral.

We discovered Hey Paison! 2 years ago, the pastrami is to die for! And the yummy cheesecake, oh my gosh it is delicious! We would love the idea of this restaurant coming to West Seattle!

JanS & JenV: Don't you read the West Seattle Blog? :-)
The old Ovio/Ama Ama space is slated to open with a new restaurant after the holidays: http://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=22316

Jefferson Square?
Posted 2 years ago # -
These are great ideas and I also flashed on Chuck and Sally's as well - although the clean up job may be more than they want to take on. I'll pass these on, and any others that come in, thank you!

What about the part of Capers that a new business (can't remember which) was trying to move into. In the post, the owner said he was not moving into the entire former Capers space (Thereby implying that the remainder is available...My two cents.)
Posted 2 years ago # -
The Beato space was quite affordable. The price was dropped quite a bit to get someone in there. Emphasis on WAS. The space is now taken. I don't know who or what is going in but I think it's off the market.
When I was at Full Tilt in White Center the other day, I noticed a few spaces for lease on that same block. The Ama Ama space is just way too big; especially for a sandwich spot. Maybe if it was turned into some kind of food court market....that could be kind of cool.

JanS and I had lunch at Hey Paison! today (really really good) and spoke with the owner.
One thing we could do for him that would make a difference is nominate his sandwich shop for Diners Drive-ins and Dives.
It's a natural for that show... and he has already been nominated.. but they respond to numbers.. the more nominations a place gets the more likely it is to end up on the show...
Anyone else interested in a West Seattle Blog forum write in campaign?
The business bump would likely propel him into West Seattle faster:)
Int he meantime, if you haven't been there yet, it's well worth checking out.

yes...really, really good steak and cheese...I had w/ provolone and grilled onions. The bread/roll was outstanding...not like the usual fare you get if you make your own...these are really, really good. I can't say that enough. We didn't have one, but they have big, fat Jewish pickles in a big barrel next to the counter, too. And by all means, try the chocolate cannoli...yummmmm !~

Hey, Christopher...I was suggesting the place down by me...not Ama Ama. The place where Ovio started - where Beato was last located. Yes, I read the blog...yes, Ama Ama is going to be a restaurant /lounge operated by the owners of Bamboo Bar and Grill.....don't you read the blog?
Johnnyblegs...the Beato space still had a sign up as of this afternoon...maybe they just haven't gotten around to taking it down yet.
And since Wingdings hasn't finalized anything yet for the Capers space, maybe that would be a good location...I'd much rather this than wings anyday....:)

There's also the spot right at the Junction where the baby clothing store used to be. Not sure if it's rented yet, but walked by yesterday and saw it was empty.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Is that space still available at the north end of Jefferson Square (where the Starbucks used to be)? Also,I've never been to Hey Paison! before, and now will be making a trip just to try it!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Try the egg and peppers. The most amazing thing I have ever had. Those big ass Jew pickles are just right also. Not too soft, and not at all sweet.
Posted 2 years ago # -
We tried it tonight and we are officially hooked. Mom had a pastrami with coleslaw and I had the meatball sandwich. Mom being from New York originally really loved the sandwich and the meatball was really good the roll almost fell apart because the meatballs were so juicy. We met the owner and told him we would be back.
As for location I was thinking it would be nice if they could find someplace down on Alki. I know the old Pegasus location is still empty. I looks like it was once two places so maybe they could rent half.

I love Hey Paison, let me count the ways: I love them for their greeting: Hey Paison! I love them for their meatball hoagies and pepper and eggs, and the little peppers on the tables mmmm, and the homemade cannoli and the ever changing flavors of homemade cheesecakes, (last week it was apple pie cheesecake - to die for). And yes I would love to have them in a truck parked in my backyard - marination style- but I really don't mind the chill drive down the back way from my place it's only about 12 minutes give or take. And if we don't support them now while they are in Burien they'll never make it up to us here in West Seattle. So I say, "car pool anyone"
Posted 2 years ago # -
Looks delicious! They even have eggplant parmeseano for us vegetarians. Yum. By the way, Full Tilt, not be be overly politically correct, but "Jew pickles" is borderline offensive. I'm sure that you didn't intend to offend, but this East Coast Jewish girl just wanted to let you know.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Does anyone else think they're a tad expensive?
Posted 2 years ago # -
jeanie that was more of a typo than a slur. Full Tilt is half owned by a mid-west Jew.
Posted 2 years ago # -
just went in for a first time visit this early afternoon. AWESOME.
Ended up getting the Italian Stallion Cheesesteak with onions and added one of those huge pickles. Dying to try the pastrami next time.
Never experienced east coast deli's, but if this is the norm, might have to move. or go to Hey Paison! more often!! :)
Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks for clarifying, Full Tilt. And your ice cream is dill-icious.
Posted 2 years ago # -
A Hey Paison! Street Food van would be awesome!
Park it up on 35th & Graham next to Marination Mobile and make it a hub for street food.
That's a seriously good idea!
(And way cheaper than renovating Chuck & Sally's)

pigeonmom...
sometimes it is difficult to balance quality and price.
On the one hand, you need to pay enough to ensure that the kitchen doesn't cut corners on ingredients..
On the other, you don't want to pay a premium for reputation or pretense.
In my opinion, Hey Paison charges a fair price for what they deliver ...
and they care enough to ask whether they met your expectations. they did.. and then some.
They are getting our business tonight... one of their sandwiches is just what hubby needs to forget the stress of working for a retailer during the holiday season... and the cannoli might make me forget my brother is headed for Iraq tomorrow... at least for as long as it takes me to eat every bite. This one, i won't share.. hubby wants some he will have to order his own ;->

jeanie Dill pickle ice cream could be the next big thing!
Posted 2 years ago # -
they close at 6 :(((
Posted 2 years ago # -
Full Tilt: Dill pickle ice cream could be just the thing for expectant moms with weird food cravings ;). Sounds a little too "out there" for my conventional taste, but I do think they have it in the South.
JoB, a heartfelt thanks to your brother for his service.

Job, go with out him. And bring me something.

@Full Tilt, how about peanut butter and dill pickle ice cream?

Hey Paison
thanks again. i just might do that...
after i bring him in to experience the ambiance...you really do add something to the experience you know...
just like Full Tilt wouldn't be the same without Full Tilt. The take out is good.. but a cone and conversation are better.

Charlabob and i wandered into Hey Paison on 152nd in the middle of Burien today for lunch and the owner took time to go over the menu and explain every dish.
I had no idea they roasted so many of their own meats there.. and those they don't they order from Jersey.
today i sampled the soup and had spaghetti and meat balls and ended up too full for a cannelloni. i didn't think that was possible.
times have been tough lately for small independent restaurants like Hey Paison.. do me a favor and drop by to keep them in business... i can still hear a chocolate dipped cannelloni calling me.
it's one of those win win situations:)
Posted 1 year ago # -
Um, cannelloni is a tube of pasta filled with cheese. I can't say a chocolate-covered cannelloni necessarily sounds all that appetizing. I think you mean cannoli.
Posted 1 year ago # -
OMG! Someone sells cannoli? Is it the real thing? That bakery that used to be on California sold cannoli, but it was awful. I grew up in a neighborhood with lots of Italians and we always got cannoli with our take-out pizza. Hey, Paison, here I come...

cjboffoli...
