Gift for 8 year old boy and 2 year old sister.

I have no idea what little kids like these days and no idea what stores even sell for little kids any more.

These gifts need to be transportable by bus (we don't have a car) and will ultimately travel to their destination on an airplane in a suitcase. So swing sets and treehouses are definitely out.

I am completely clueless and have never met these children. The only thing I really know is that the little girl likes to be a princess.

I'm stumped, stranded, and lost here. Help me out please. :-/

I have found many great gifts at Curious Kidstuff and Atomic Boys. Good luck!

Legos for the boy - you can't go wrong with legos and they don't weigh much. A princess dress up costume at target runs around $20 and will fit her for another year or two and she will love dressing up.

  4. The very best gift for your grandchildren will simply be spending time with them! As far as material gifts, have to agree with hollyplace on Legos for the 8 year old. Try Star Wars or Ninjago sets. He may like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series if he is a reader. Boys also love the Calvin and Hobbes comics and other graphic novels. For the little one, simple art supplies might be fun (finger paint, playdough, fat crayons and markers).

The big hits at our house this year were legos (star wars and ninjago) and the leapster computer sets. I have boys, but I've seen literally every girl at co-op preschool loving the pink poof dress they have at costco. Think hot pink ballerina you can wear all the time. Makes me want a boy that would wear them or a little girl. :)

Magna Tiles! Great toy for all ages and genders. They are colored plastic tiles, big enough for the under-3 set, with magnets safely contained within, used for construction like legos. The clear ones are like stained glass, too, very appealing. My 2.5 year old loves them, my 12 yo loves them, and anywhere I've been where they are available to play with, anyone over the age of 2 will play with them, even adults!

And according to the magna tiles website, Curious Kidstuff carries them.

  7. Magazine subscriptions won't be hard to transport, and will keep giving new gifts all year. You could pick up a current copy of the magazines at B&N, if you want a physical gift to unwrap--and include an announcement of the subscription. I'd suggest Ladybug for the 2 yo, unless she's a very young 2, in which case Babybug might be a good choice. For your grandson, you can't beat Cricket, although if he's a young 8, Spider or Ask (science & arts focus) would also be a good choice. http://www.cricketmag.com

Another easy-to-transport gift that won't clutter up their lives with more stuff is a membership at a local children's museum, science museum, or zoo.

I think I remember reading that those magna tile thingies were this year's hot Christmas toy? They do sound cool, I like that idea.

(she asks stupidly) Where is Curious Kidstuff?

  9. Curious Kidstuff is at 4740 California Avenue SW, East side of California Avenue just next to the new shoe/sock store. I think, too that one or two of the local coupon books (Community Shopper or Best of West Seattle/Alki etc...) may have a $5 off coupon.

May I suggest Morph-O-Scopes unique optical illusion Kits. They've earned 25 national top toys awards and they're created right here in West Seattle by OOZ & OZ. Both the Circus Kit and the Sports of All Sorts Kit would be great for your 8 year-old boy. Website: OOZandOZ.com Phone: 206.344.3338.

  12. No one suggested age appropriate books, and the time reading the books to them...or with them...so I am...:)
