I need a garden tool which I cannot find in stores. It is a simple tool but apparently not available in the US.

Can anyone recommend a welding shop or somesuch kind of place that might make me a tool? Should be a fairly easy task.

Contact info would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Transplantella

Contact my wife Mimi at Studio Steel LLC - 206-650-0235. Mimi makes every effort to fit in small little projects like yours and would likely be able to build the tool you desire. Better yet, you can take one of her beginner welding classes and build it yourself:)

    BumP.

I'm still looking for a source to make this garden tool if anybody out there has an idea.

  5. If it's really simple, I might be able to help, but my welding skills are a bit rusty (no pun intended).

There's a blacksmith/weld shop in White Center about a block south of Big Al's, or one block East and a bit north of McClendon's. They'd probably be a better bet.

CM, how can I contact you? This is a simple garden tool no more complex than a shovel, actually just a full size nejiri gama hoe. Doesn't need to be pretty, just slice up weeds.

By chance, do you have a name for the blacksmith shop in White Center?

  7. Oh, those are cool. I think I've seen them up at Swanson's, and maybe even at McClendon's. Might try West Seattle Nursery. Unfortunately, that's more metal working than I can do easily.

    So, a couple of options:

    Macy's White Center Blacksmith, 206-767-2731, 10037 14th Ave SW

    Or:

    Good Luck!

  9. Hey, when you say "full size", do you mean one with a longer handle than normal? Like one you can use standing up?

If so, and you buy one of the shorter ones, it would be fairly easy to add a long handle to it. PM me if you want.

I have the hand tool. Really, it cannot be properly converted to a standard size tool because the blade is way to short for a longer handle.

I owned such a standard size tool overseas, but it was shop made and not a factory product. Fairly crude in it's construction and not nearly as precise and beautiful as the store bought nejiri tool, but it did a great job of dicing weeds without turning over the soil.

    Appreciate your leads.

Try this website. I love their tools. You may find something similar that will work.

Another try for not so common garden implements is Hardwick's Hardware in the U District.

I got a killer bamboo splitter and sweet serrated scythe there last fall.

Hardwicks is where I got the short nejiri gama hoe. Great hardware store. Love it! Lots of corners and bins of cool stuff.
But alas no full sized tool there.

I'll hijack my own thread for a sec.....I was in Home Depot :( last week looking for a couple of other more common outdoor tools, basically for clearing brush--ivy and blackberry vines. I wanted a sythe type thing and a curved machete. Nothing. Their non-power garden tool supply is suckage. Lots of blowers and mowers and expensive weapons of mass destruction but a total dearth of decent garden tools. Dreadful place.

  14. transplantella, suggest you ask McClendon Hardware in White Center if they can order a longer one for you. They carry the shorter hand tool sized ones.

  15. Forgot this.....McClendon's also has scythes and machetes. They have an on-line catalog
    http://www.mclendons.com/
but I've had the store order me things in the past that aren't in their catalog.

I'm just seeing this and if you haven't gotten what you're looking for, you may want to contact the welding department at South Seattle Community College. This could be someone's final project and the instructor's are very helpful to the students. It would be a cost effective way to get what you're looking for. Best of luck!

If you need one that truely can't be purchased from a commercial source, let me know. I just recently made a left handed version for my mom. Cool tool, but they are only made for righties!

My savior! I am a rightie, but I_really_NEED_this_tool. And I cannot turn up any commercial outlet anywhere to buy one.

If you will make me such a tool I will give you my first born son (mind, you'll be sending him back by return post, ASAP).

Contact info? You're on. Let's do it!

You can post here, PM me here, email me at expat09721@yahoo.com, or call me at (206)453-5774.
Any way you want, just save me from unnecessarily shoveling up four acres of weeds.

    Marsha

    I await your contact.
