My son is an academically high achieving 5th grader and we're trying to decide what the best MS option for him is. We live in the Madison neighborhood but also wonder about Denny, Westside, Explorer West and West Seattle Academy. Would love to hear about your experiences at Madison and any of the other schools. Thanks for the help!

Denny does offer Spectrum classes. Check out Denny Accademics modules online. We have been pleasantly surprised how well Denny Middle School has worked out.

Explorer West has an Open House tomorrow-Wednesday night at 6pm. My daughter will be one of the hosts-she had a very good academic expereince and is now exceeding in all honors classes at WSHS. All her friends who went in to other schools, both public and private are doing very well academically also as well as socially-they are a great group of people and we have nothing but great things to say about the school. I have also heard that Madision has an advanced Math program.

Thanks luckymom30. I've heard great things with the new building at Denny but don't want to assume we can get in since it's out of our boundaries. I'll check out the academic modules.
SpeakLoud, we are planning to attend the open house at EW- trying to keep all options open! Good to know that your daughter adjusted to WSHS honors as post-graduation placement is a big question. Where did most of her friends go to HS?

Surprisingly a lot got into Chief Sealth and then to Kenndy-private catholic in Burien-apparently really good (if you like that sort of thing!)

WSMomof3- so what did you think of EW?

SpeakLoud- my son really liked EW and I was impressed with the attention from the faculty. We'll give it a second look, for sure. Thanks for the insight.

Have you had your son tested to see if he qualifies for Spectrum or APP? My daughter is in APP and Washington MS has been a great academic challenge for her. If you do attend Madison, some teachers are MUCH better than others. Overall, I don't feel they push the kids enough. My son wasn't thrilled with his time there.

WSmomof3- I can tell you that the attention dosn't stop-they genuinely pay attention to every student-one of the gifts of a small school. Good luck with the decision-and know that even if you don;t get exactly what you want someonehow it all works out....

Parentof2- yes, my son qualifies for spectrum, so I really want to find the right fit for him. I've heard parents who are very happy with Washington for APP but haven't heard much re: Spectrum. Would love to know your thoughts. I've heard similar feedback about Madison (that the kids aren't pushed the way some need). Did you find teachers open to parent involvement and requests for more challenge?

I don't personally know students in the spectrum program at WSMS, but feel the school overall is very good. Again, some teachers at Madison are great; parent involvement is always welcome, but I didn't get the impression they were very willing to step it up for those students who need it as they are trying to keep students having difficutly from falling too far behind.
