  1. Looking for a reputable moving company...any suggestions?

  2. We just got bids for our move to San Francisco from Allied, Atlas and Mayflower.
Mayflower was the most expensive ($1000 above the other 2 quotes) and the guy bragged about being so good about estimating weight of shipment. Felt a little like being sold a used car.
The Allied quote was cheaper than Atlas, tho' the ship weight was higher. However, if you're AAA member you can Full Value replacement coverage for free (no deductible) when shipping with Atlas.
Otherwise it's 60-cents a pound or a charge based on what deductible you want to pay if your shipment gets damaged in any way.
Overall the Atlas rep was the most informative about what was going to happen to our stuff, and when and how much we'd be expected to pay and when. We also worked with them (Atlas) to get a Smart Move container - basically you fill it yourself and they ship it down, which is also an option if you only have an apartment's worth of stuff to move.
That being said, we haven't moved yet, so a whole host of things could yet go wrong ;-D

  5. Sorry you'll be moving away, WSMom!

We've used Star Moving a few times (http://www.starmoving.com) and have been very happy with them. They're affiliated with United Van Lines and helped unload our stuff when we moved to Lynnwood from the east coast. Then we used them from Lynnwood to West Seattle, and then again for a local WS move. We've been very pleased with them every time.

haven't moved in ages, so can't recommend a specific company, but, speaking of AAA, you might check the BBB-accredited movers:

    http://www.bbb.org/western-washington/accredited-business-directory/movers

also, the WA Utilities & Transpo Comm regulates movers *within* WA; their tips brochure has a lot of helpful hints:

Hate to lose you, but Portland is *almost* as nice as Seattle.
