Mini-Dachshund needs a permanent home..asap!

Looking to re-home our 4 year old, female mini-dachshund. She's a wonderful dog, great with kids and other animals, and very affectionate. The problem is, we have an 8 month old baby who needs to sleep, and a mommy who does too! Our dog's bark echoes throughout the house, inevitably waking the baby up from naps, and throwing our whole day off. We also anticipate the learning to crawl and walk stages being especially challenging with a dog so low to the ground and excited to play. Just don't have the energy for it. She deserves lots of love and attention. I appreciate that people have lots of suggestions on how to solve our challenges as dog owners, but would prefer to just hear from those interested in being her adoptive family.

Pixie is a wonderful and affectionate dog. She'd love a home with kids over the age of 2, and if someone would let her sleep with them she'd be on cloud 9. She has never bitten anyone, and doesn't have that bad attitude that some little dogs get. She's just sweet. She eats dry food, Iams Natural. But she isn't picky. Potty training is a challenge with her breed, but she will always use a puppy pad if you forget to take her out in time.

Email me if you're interested in meeting Pixie. dstubblefield1@gmail.com

    Thanks WSB!

  2. First of all, have you contacted the breeder you got her from? A reputable breeder will take their dog back, no questions asked. You don't need to feel guilty or ashamed for giving the dog back. A good breeder will understand your situation and help find a new home, it's part of their job. The breeder will have many more resources for finding the right home for your dog.

Next, have you contacted any rescue groups? Again, they will have better resources for finding a good family for your dog. Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue handles dachshunds: http://www.spdrdogs.org/rescue/how_to_rehome.html

Lastly, PLEASE do not just offer your dog for free to the first person who says they want her. "Free" dogs often end up as fighting bait or worse, especially small breeds like yours. Please at least interview the family and charge them a small fee for the dog.

Thanks for the input Hopey. The breeder was not reputable...we would never take her back there. I have emailed the Dachshund rescue lady, no word back yet, and that was a week ago. And OF COURSE I would never just hand an animal over to just anyone. That's why I chose to post on WSB...I know that it's a community of great people. We are looking for a good and loving home. The money thing doesnt matter to us, as long as they know about dogs, and have a relationship with a local vet. Even if they don't currently have a pet, they probably have had one in the past and will be able to talk about the care of one. Charging a hundred bucks doesn't insure a good home. We'll find the right family for Pixie..promise!

What about trying a no-bark collar at night?

If I could have another, I'd love her! We have two dogs and two cats and adult children live on their own. My heart says, "ooooooo you can have one more," and my head says, "don't you dare become a hoarder." I'll ask around though!

Thanks WSB!......Pixie joined a pack of 4 other Doxie brothers and sisters at her new home this morning. She fit right in....and her new adoptive mommy Sue is fantastic. Pixie will sleep in her bed, with her brothers and sisters and spend her days playing and enjoying treats like carrots! Yay.....so happy for my girl.

I hope its not the woman named Sue that I know of who sells dogs for research! I'm sure it's not. I'm so glad you were able to find a good home for your little Pixie. Now you and your baby can get some well needed sleep! Yay!

Just an aside; I saw on Dogs 101 that the reason the Doxie bark is so loud, has to do with being heard when they are underground going after their prey.

So glad the re-home worked out. Love happy endings for all.

Trisket....I sure hope not too. However, if it is the same Sue, she went to a whole lot of trouble to appear lovingly obsessed with Dachshunds! She had a doxie sweatshirt and watch on, hundreds of displayed figurines, countless pieces of artwork, and 4 very happy little dog children run around. All of this to throw me off of her sinister plan?...doubt it. I think Pixie just struck doxie gold! And Im sooooo thankful for that, and for Michele at the Wash Dog, for posting our story at the store after seeing it on the blog. Thanks everyone!
