McCain suspends his campaign & pulls out of Friday's debate

  1. Not to sound alarmist, but is this the first step to suspending the election in November?? I have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach...

"McCain: Scrap Friday Debate for Bailout; Obama Camp: 'The Debate is On'
ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos and Rick Klein report: Sen. John McCain on Wednesday said he would “suspend” his presidential campaign to come to Washington to help negotiate a financial bailout bill, a dramatic move designed to seize a powerful issue."

  2. I was just about to post this as well! Apparently the Obama camp says that the debate is still on.

    This should get interesting...

Ya, i've been wondering the same thing. Those people are psycho and criminal. I wouldn't put it past them in a second. Good for Obama. If he doesn't play into it that is good!

  4. Now THAT should make for some interesting campaign news!

Bayou - I don't know where abc is getting the Obama response (everytime I follow the link my screen freezes), but I didn't think Obama had responded yet. I've been sitting here with CNN waiting for Obama's live reponse...supposed to come any time.

  6. If the debate goes on as planned, he's going to get ripped apart for suggesting this. Moderators will have to refer to him as "Senator McPansypants".

Just out of curiosity - has this been done before? Is it actually feasible to postpone an election? Isn't that unconstitutional?

  7. honest to god, I can't believe how wsblog even gives me the first heads up on national news; thanks guys

  8. It just says that a senior official for the Obama campaign said Obama intends to debate. That of course could change by the time the official statement is released, we'll see.

Also, Obama contacted McCain first to initiate a bipartisan response to the crisis.

"The Obama campaign said in a statement that Obama had called McCain around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to propose that they issue a joint statement in support of a package to help fix the economy as soon as possible. McCain called back six hours later and agreed to the idea of the statement, the Obama campaign said. McCain's statement was issued to the media a few minutes later."

  9. I heard from a reliable source that just this morning the Obama camp went to the McCain camp and offered to work together to come up with a response to the financial crisis - this was the McCains response to their offer...

  10. ...That's utterly disturbing.

oh, c'mon you brilliant WSB political minds ... help me out ... there is precident for delaying the election isn't there? done once? I can't remember who it was and you probably know. I just think it would send a very bad message to the rest of the world if they were postponed.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  12. Obama just stepped up to speak live on cable news

    Posted 3 years ago #
  13. GenHillOne, I love a google challenge but the article that I found is disturbingly about Bush looking into delaying the 2004 elections in the event of a terrorist attack.

Nonetheless, it says "No US presidential election has ever been postponed."

  14. Live feed also on CNN but I can't seem to get to it. Damn plugins!

  15. He's essentially saying that he thinks that a time like this is an important time to have a debate, since the person elected in 40 days is the one who's going to clean up this mess. And (paraphrasing) that the president should be able to multitask.

Obama emphatically believes the debate should go on. I'm sure there will be a transcript to link soon.

    He's absolutely nailing it.

Thanks Bayou, maybe I'm smoking something...I thought it was way back though.

  17. Boy, Obama's response hit the nail right on the head and jabbed McCain too! touche'

    Posted 3 years ago #
  18. I think at McCains age, he can really only focus on one thing at a time, and that is a little hard for him.

we know mcCain is going to die of skin cancer anyway, so obama should just debate palin about jesus and dragons.

  20. so this is the October surprise. Great. I guess I better go make my "Our Most Glorious Dear Leader George Bush President for Life" banner to stick in the yard....

    Posted 3 years ago #
  21. If that man is not out of office by 1/20 I'm going to vom. Obama had better milk this one because "not being able to fit a debate into one's busy schedule" is unacceptable. I need a president that can chew gum and walk at the same time... minimum!!!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  22. Cait, where's vom? Is that in Canada? cus that's where I'll be!

The viewer emails on CNN (sorry, not much variety in my sources today) are all in the "how stupid do you think we are, McCain?" vein...this whole scenario is really bizarre.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  24. McCain is past the age where he should have the keys to a car let alone the White House. I really do not need Miss "I can see Russia from my house" in charge of my country.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  25. Funny that you mention that FullTilt. When I was looking at the debate viewing parties, there is one that is entitled "I can see Russia from Fremont." Cracked me up anyways.

I'll be in Vom, CA also. Or marching. Or something. McDrain needs to lose.

BTW, there was a really great really in Anchorage against Palin. With cool photos. If anyone is bummed is bummed and wondering "what is wrong with the country" you've got to see this!

  27. It reminds me of something Chris Rock said and I'm paraphrasing here: "He's 72! I mean... I love my grandpa but we don't let him out in PUBLIC."

Cait - LOL! Reminds me of bumper stickers in Florida - "Keep Grandma Off the Streets - Take her to Bingo"!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  29. I think Cait meant she was going to VOMIT, not to a place called Vom! But that's pretty funny....

I thought I read somewhere that there is some kind of provision for postponing a presidential election - even though it has never been invoked I think that it is technically possible. Yikes. I will join Cait at the vomitorium.

Its only a matter of time before McCain cracks...

I am sure his campaign has him on the best drugs to keep him happy, but the pressure on him will show itself, it's just a matter of time.

McCain had to meet with Henry Kravis in New York today....if you don't know who he is look it up..
Debating anything on the economy is making him panic. Obama carried himself very well today..
I heard on an interview on MSNBC with a Republican congressman from Florida that they (McCain or Obama) only need to be their to vote..they don't want to politicize the negogiations....(that's funny!!) You know McCain ...country first...but first he has to stay in NY to confer with Henry Kravis, the "King of Greed", his main fundraiser.(Oh yes, and Lady DeRothschild of England...???) Funny, last week before all this came tumbling down, The NY Times had a 2 full page article entitled "What does Henry want??".....it said that he was considering offering an IPO for his private equity fund...this is the king of leverage buyouts during the Reagan years who considers privatization the only route for all finanacial entities...hmmm....so when I read that I knew we were heading for something not good!
I wonder when we will really know where all of this money ended up...hope I live long enough...it is the most outrageous demand of the American taxpayer ever...just give us the money with no conditions and we will take care of everything. I really wonder what we can believe, because the "fear factor" is really being pedaled big time, but this really is a true crisis.
Whoever is really curious I recommend reading Naomi Kline's book "Shock Doctrine" now is the time folks...this is exactly the type of national
catastrophe she writes about. Really interesting.

  37. A Sept. McCain article outlining his healthcare plan:
    http://www.contingencies.org/septoct08/mccain.pdf

    >>"Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking"

Do not let his man anywhere near our healthcare system!!!

Two of my employees called to say they couldn’t make it in to work today because of the financial crisis. They think it’s pretty funny. I don’t.
