Looking for a low-drama,low-hierarchical, friendly group of knitters that exists already, or I'm thinking of starting one. People who are comfortable with any age, etc, and look to spend time with other good people. Evenings, weekend times are best for me. Well-lit areas preferred.
Some groups sound friendly on paper, but whew! they have the social dynamics of a reality show, with dominant queen bees.

I think Seattle Yarn hosts a knitting group of sorts on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. I used to go a few years ago and loved it! Now that I've finally moved back to the area, I've been meaning to start it up again.
Knitting circle drama?! I see a "Best In Show"-type movie opportunity. That and one about PTA moms. Still waiting for that :)

There is another knitting group meetingt at Uptown across from True Value. I don't know which evening they meet but have met a few people from that group whom I classify as cool. It is not my place to drop names, as I am not a part of the group. I don't know nothin' 'bout no drama, but there are very skilled knitting artists who do amazing projects to learn from. Call Uptown to see what night the knitters meet.
Also, White Center has a couple of knitting groups but it has been awhile so I don't know where they meet.

I'm part of the group that westseattledood mentioned, we're the West Seattle Needlers and have been meeting at Uptown since 2008. Come knit with us! We meet there at 7 every Wednesday and welcome all new members and drop-ins.
Are you on Ravelry.com? If not, I highly recommend joining. We have a group page (you guessed it - West Seattle Needlers) and are very active with updates, field trips, and general chatter. Hunter, 3.14 Bakery in White Center has a group that meets from 2-4 Sundays. I spoke with Jessica, the owner, who crochets! She assures me it's a small, friendly group. I'll be there.
Their coffee and baked goods are very good. More good WS/WC news. Over and out.
ws4ever, if you're looking for low-drama, don't go to West Seattle Needlers at Uptown. I attended that group for a while and was subjected to the "mean girls" treatment that people should have grown out of in middle school. There might be a few friendly people in the bunch, but what I found was a clique out to put other people down to make themselves feel superior. Try friending a few of them on Ravelry, and you'll find yourself cruelly mocked if your profile isn't up to whatever their high standards are.

My personal experience with WSN has been nothing but positive. I appreciate the diverse and supportive members and the group has made West Seattle truly feel like my home. Ws4ever, again I hope you find the right group for you!

Myself and another knitter started the West Seattle Needlers group. We are on Ravelry, under that name, and we have been knitting at Uptown Espresso for years. We host parties, knit at the beach, knit in Portland, go to workshops together, visit Churchmouse yarns on Bainbridge at least a few times a year, and sometimes we knit around town at various bars and pubs on Sundays...
Brittlestar, your comment really pains me for two reasons: one is that you felt that way. That makes me so sad because that is the exact opposite of what our group is about. EVERYBODY is welcome in our group. Any member of our group will tell you that. I can't think of a single time when a member has been singled out for anything. It just doesn't happen. We are straight, gay, old, young, liberal, conservative, men, and women. We are a community, we support each other, and we are NOT caddy bitches. So, again, I am very sorry that was your experience! Your comments also make me sad because somebody else may come on here and then not feel willing to give our group a try, based on your comments. I hope that is not the case. I wish you would have talked to some of us about what happened. We would have tried to make it right. For the record, I am not doubting your experience! Our group on Ravelry now has over 200 members and our table group frequently changes based on several factors. But I can tell you that, our original core group, would just never do that. I want you to know that I started that group, having just moved to West Seattle. I had no friends and had just started knitting again. My knitting group was my sole source of friendship for quite awhile. I know this was the case for a bunch of other people too. We have talked over and over about how much we cherish our group and the supportive vibe therein.
Our group has evolved over the years many times. We are always gaining and losing members, to babies, jobs, yoga, taking a break from knitting, and whatever. But I do not think we have ever lost a member because we were mocking people! We may not be the right group for you, but please know that we are good people. I hope you find a group that better fits and I hope you don't ever have to have that experience again.
I know there is another group starting up in White Center, that is going to be for all sorts of stitchery. I will post details if I hear more...

Also, I didn't mean to give the impression that our group is just for knitting. Seattle Yarn has a sticker on their door: "crochet friendly". So funny! Who cares what you do as long as you're doin' it. :)

This post cracked me up as I could not conceive a group of knitters that would be considered a "high strung, unfriendly" knitting group. Sounds like jumbo shrimp to me. I guess I have a lot to learn about the dark and seamy underbelly of the knitting circle mafia.
Group dynamics are what they are, 2 Much Whine. Inconceivaable unless you are in the mix. Often people are doing as well as they can, just reacting to real life with what they have to offer at the moment. The intention of this thread was to find community, not mock anyone, so thanks for good information, WSB people. Lesson here, if any, is to consider how your comments may affect someone else. Not hyperbole, or mafia, or excitement--it is fun to react to the words--but maintaining the feeling of inclusiveness for welcome guests. Over and out. Thanks!

I'm a West Seattle resident looking to dontate knitted items such as baby hats, booties, etc. Is anyone aware of any collection/drop-off points in West Seattle for these types of items which are then donated to hospitals or charities for babies?
