Has anyone noticed this terrified young dog?

Toby is a young neutered yellow lab/mix that escaped on Friday 9/03/10 in the Admiral District near SW California and 45th Ave SW. He is very scared and is sticking within a pretty small area in the north end of West Seattle. He knows his name but likely will not come if called. He is under the care of Vashon Island Pet Protectors and they are frantically searching for him.

Signs are posted all over West Seattle and he has been spotted on a number of occasions, primarily in the early morning hours before 7 am-ish and in the evenings from 7:30-10:30 pm, when traffic is slower and scary sounds lessen. He has not been responsive to food or people searching for him. He is likely hiding out during the daylight hours when traffic is heavier and there is more activity in the neighborhood. He could be hiding in the greenbelt, park, under a deck, behind a shed or anywhere that is quiet and where he feels safe and unnoticed. He also could be traveling between the North end of West Seattle and the West Seattle ferry dock. He will likely run/hide if approached, so the best thing to do is keep him sighted and contact the folks below immediately.

    Important points about Toby:
    • Yellow lab mix, male
    • Wearing a black nylon buckle-type collar (id tag is for Vashon Island Pet Protectors; micro chipped)
    • Sightings of Toby in this area are typically around 7 am-ish and in the evenings from 7:30-10pm
    • Locations sighted: the triangle of Sunset Ave SW/46th Ave SW/SW Atlantic St, as well as SW Massachusetts St and Ferry Ave SW. All of the streets around Hamilton Viewpoint Park are likely areas he is in.
    • Friendly with other dogs.

If you see Toby, please contact:

  4. Has anyone thought about possibly putting smelly food out and trap him? They do it all the time in CA.
I don't see any other way that will work...I see his flyers everywhere:)

    Hey all,

Update this morning from folks looking daily for Toby is as follows: "Last night he was headed up Delridge over to Dawson, up to 18th. This morning he was seen back down at Alki, thank goodness! The last 2/3 days he has been on the bluff above Alkai at Atlantic and 46th on the one side, and Ferry & Massachusettes on the other."

Toby is still out there! Please keep an eye out and let everyone know if you see him.

Many thanks to all looking out for this big rescue dog. He needs to get to his forever home and finally be safe forever.

  9. Lets hope that dog is ok. I cringed yesterday when I was walking Carson over by Hiawatha and saw all the street poles plastered with the missing signs, all within a hundred feet of where we have seen a fox and coyote.

  10. Someone texted us that they thought they saw Toby this morning in the Admiral area - I checked to be sure they had called the original numbers, and they say they have.

  16. Ok i do trap cats and some experience trapping small dogs, not large ones. The large traps are VERY hard to get. So, while I know this is difficult try and get a LOCALIZED feeding station. ok I am working a get a type a trap it is a noose type trap YES IT HUMANE. This is why you want one area where the dog is eating. I will try and keep up on the blog as to where the dog is being seen. it is very IMPORTANT that the dog is feed in ONE spot.

if you have any questions you can call me 427-6454.

    TOBY SPOTTED LATE THIS AFTERNOON!

Toby was seen this afternoon around the 7800 block and 45th Ave SW greenbelt (near the Fauntleroy tennis courts/Circle K). He skittishly approached a man trying to help, but fled when a passerby with a barking dog approached.

Last night he was headed up Delridge over to Dawson, up to 18th. This morning he was seen back down at Alki. The last 2/3 days he has been on the bluff above Alki at Atlantic and 46th on the one side, and Ferry & Massachusettes on the other.

Toby appears healthy but is terrified. Please do not leave food out for him. Rescuers will be setting out a humane trap(s)and will be luring him there with food in the traps. If other food is available, it will make it harder to capture him and get him to safety. This is how another lost dog in West Seattle was caught after weeks on the run.

I am not able to attach Toby's flier to this email, so please contact me directly if you would like it or can possibly help leave one at the households in the 7800 block of 45th Ave SW and the neighborhoods around the greenbelt. Any help is truly appreciated to get this boy home!

    Many thanks!

  19. ok this is fine, I meant NO harm, this is also how I have trapped dogs. If that type of trap does NOT work let me know I do have another one. what ever helps I guess right.

    good luck

    Hammerhead,
I would guess the primary folks involved would love your help with the trap(s) if you can do that. Please contact the names on the list I've posted so everyone is coordinating. Your help would be so appreciated, thank you. There is definitely one specific location from where he was today that the homeowner has said he doesn't mind a trap being put in his yard (next to the greenbelt), as long as folks help to keep checking it daily. The poor boy came from a horrible hoarding situation, which accounts for his fear and avoidance of people. I think humane trapping may likely be how he comes back in to safety, and I know from experience that it's a good method and very humane. Many thanks Pamela!

  23. The owners of the dog need to contact me direclty, I will be hearing from my friend with ALOT of experience in trapping dogs. I just don't need alot of "cooks" I need the "chef".

Has the large trap been place out yet or what is the plan there. Again while I may trap cats mostly, I too have helped trap a could of little dogs with my cat traps. The basic concept is the same.

  29. A note I just got from Karleen, who we hear from often on dog issues (though I'm not sure what group/org she's with), says Toby's been found. Looking for more details. Or maybe they'll emerge here first.

  35. From Toby's new adoptive person Grace:
    >>I can't thank you and your readers enough for helping to locate our dog Toby. We received many phone calls from your readers which helped pin down his location. As a result of those calls and the terrific work done by Cindy Koch and the many rescuers who put up photos and spent days looking for him, Toby has been found and is on his way to Vashon to be nursed back to health.<<
