I am hoping some of you WS bloggers can recommend a play field that would be empty on Saturday mornings during soccer season. We have a group of 2-year-olds that we wanted to take out to kick the ball around and get some exercise without being in anyone else's way. I appreciate any suggestions.

what about the field behind Hiawatha Comm. Center? You could call and ask if there is an organized group there, and if not, go for it. It's the side that borders Walnut SW

I don't know what part of WS you are in, but here are a couple to drive by: Roxhill Park on Roxbury, Fairmount(?) Park on Fauntleroy and Lincoln Park. Alki Community Center is surprisingly quiet, least it used to be, later in the afternoon on Saturday. I doubt two-year-olds need a real soccer field; just a dog-free stretch of grass and a few orange cones or some pieces of rope or similar. Should be fun!
I think I miss coaching kids' soccer.;).

Thanks Jan S and Westseattledood. I think Roxbury, Alki, Fairmont, and the Lincoln Park ball fields are filled with mini soccer goals for leagues on Saturdays. I will check Hiawatha. I don't think they use the field there. I finally tracked down a number for the parks department that assigns fields. Hopefully I can find something. You are right, we don't need much just some clean grass. I am buying a couple portable soccer goals, cones and having kids bring their own ball.

Check out Riverview Playfield and Highland Park Playground. Both are in Highland Park.

Try the High Point area - near the community center 32nd & Myrtle - there is a large dirt soccer field but also several areas with grass which could be used there and aalso the school area might be good choice. Good luck and have fun.

Does it have to be REALLY big? During repeated drivebys I haven't seen a lot of usage on the nice grassy areas at the new Morgan Junction Park and Dakota Place Park so far. Definitely not playfield size, but you said 2-year-olds ...

I know Riverview and Highland Park are usually really busy with soccer leagues. I was going to recommend High Point as well - even if there are some games there it seems there is plenty of open space NOT designated for soccer fields. And I'm guessing you could easily find a patch of green in Lincoln Park for the little ones.

E.C. Hughes has some greenspace, too.

Gatewood Elementary has a grassy area on the playground that is not used for organized sports. And then there are climbing structures for when the organized part devolved into just playing. The playground isn't used much at all over the weekends.

hollyplace - Is this just a bunch of friends with similarly aged children wanting to get together, or some group (ala PEPS), or...? I ask because I have a 2-year-old who LOVES kicking around a ball, and while I'd looked into eventually signing him up for a team, I really don't think he'd get much out of it quite yet. But I'd love to see him having fun with other little ones his age. If this is something we could possible get in on, let me know. Thanks!

There are a ton of these that didn't even cross my mind, so thanks for all the suggestions! I am sure that one or two of them will work out. Carrieann - It is for a meetup group here in WS that I organize for kids born in 2007. It is free to join and we try to keep most of the events free or inexpensive so that everyone can participate. We have most of our events during the week, but I am trying to schedule some things on the weekends so people that work can participate too or so that the dads can give the moms a break now and then. what about at Hightpoint behind Our Lady of Guadalupe? Seems to me there is grass there.

agreed, Celeste. We go all the time and it's never full, even when the fields are. Same for Hughes.

hollyplace - I have to admit, I was a member of the WS Moms Of Tots and the WS Teeter Tots for many months, but aside from participating in one event (dropping off food donations @ Bonnie's) I never made it out to anything. My intentions were noble, but I just couldn't seem to get it together enough to be a regular participant, so I left the groups. Now that my daughter is in school from 9-3, I do have that rather large window of time where I can focus on my younger one, and I think it'd be good to get him some face time with others his age. Thanks for the info!
