wsn00bParticipantIs there a good list of West Seattle based charities that work within the scope of the West Seattle peninsula?

WSBKeymasterNot a list but if there is anything you are looking for in particular, we might have some suggestions after covering practically every nonprofit around here for 7 years. You can ask here and I’ll check back on next round of spam patrol or e-mail editor@westseattleblog.com … TR

wsn00bParticipantI’m just attempting to catch up on my shameful lack of charitable/public contributions this year for both time and money. Larger groups like Red Cross and NPR are on the list but I’m also looking to contribute to something local to the peninsula too.

WSBKeymasterMaybe we can crowdsource a list. I’ll start with 5 that are top of mind. There are dozens more but I have to run back to a story. Even your nearest community council (most don’t charge dues) might be a nonprofit, if you want to support community advocacy work, and then there are PTAs, arts groups …
West Seattle Food Bank

White Center Food Bank

West Seattle Helpline (emergency short-term help)
WestSide Baby (diapers for babies, other necessities)
Nature Consortium (restores WS forest, youth art)

WSBKeymasterOne story down, so I have a minute for five more nonprofits:
West Seattle Community Orchestras (so kids can participate in the program free)
Southwest Youth and Family Services (many educational/counseling services for families in need, kids having a bumpy time of it)
West Seattle Tool Library
Seal Sitters
Arts Corps (based at Youngstown)

WSBKeymasterAnd one more round of five. Then I’m calling it quits.

2 Much WhineParticipantHey noob, I see you have lots of choices here but I have another worthwhile charity. The West Seattle High School PTSA is my primary choice for donations. I’ve donated to PTSA directly but at the moment I am specifically targeting the WSHS Pro-Start program. They are in need of some supplies. I’m working to sell handblown glass pumpkins to raise funds to buy Pro-Start their requested food processors, blenders, aprons, dish towels and other supplies. If you’re not familiar with ProStart, it is a food service and restaurant prep program that focuses on culinary arts, food and kitchen safety, and nutrition. Students obtain a food service worker card so this program really gives them skills they can use to enter the workforce. Anyway, I’m selling awesome glass pumpkins for $40 to raise funds for the program. I’d love to sell you one (or more). I even have pumpkins in Seahawks colors for that Thanksgiving table when we’ll be playing the 49ers – Go Hawks!

kayoParticipantPathfinder K-8 School, a public school on Pigeon Point, is in the final phase of fundraising to start construction of our new playground. This will be a wonderful play area not only for our school, but for the entire community. Donors will be recognized with engraved glass tiles incorporated into a large stone structure on the playground. The design has a particular emphasis on serving the needs of our large number of special needs and autistic kids while also incorporating our school’s emphasis on environmental education. It will truly be a wonderful community resource for years to come. Donations to our playground are tax deductible. We’d love your support! Thanks for considering! http://pathfinderplayground14.wordpress.com
BTW: Great topic idea! I am happy to have some more local charities to support with our end of year giving.

2krazy4wordsParticipantyou can look up and research local charities at:
Great NonProfits

wsn00bParticipantThanks for continuing to add to the list. I found more on http://smile.amazon.com (Amazon’s shop to donate version of the regular Amazon.com) that also picks up its list of charities from Guidestar (http://www.guidestar.org/) as 2krazy4words linked above.
So if you search for “West Seattle” on Guidestar or the “Change your charity” when logged into Amazon Smile, a whole bunch of charities show up with West Seattle in the name (with some false positives “west” + in “seattle”.
Anyways, this thread helped me do my bit for now.
Thanks!
