Rescue groups and shelters typically take in more stray animals during the Fourth of July because so many pets are scared off by fireworks. Frightened pets often run a long ways before they stop...and then can't find their way home.
Here are some tips to help keep your pets calm and safe:
1. Make sure your pet has a well-fitted collar with an id tag.
2. Microchip your pet as a backup...in case their collar comes off.
3. Don't take pets to fireworks events/parties.
4. Do not leave pets outside, even if your yard is fenced.
5. Make a safe, cozy, inside den for your pet--preferably in the basement (less exploding noise) and be sure to have a radio or TV turned on. Keep the lights on to mask the flashes
6. Some dogs feel more secure wearing an "anxiety wrap". Just use a t-shirt, putting the dog's front legs through the arm holes then knot it over dog's back. (If you try this on a cat, let us know how it goes)
7. Distract your pet with his/her favorite toy
8. Keep your curtains closed
9. exercise/play with you pet during the day so s/he'll be tired in the evening
