KCAC/tunnel

  1. It was just announced that KCAC and the Humane society are NOT taking animals for a while. (I just found out KCAC will go out on calls) Over 3500 animals were turned over to these organizations. There is NO money in the budget to KCAC to keep it running. SO now what are people going to with the animals they can NOT keep. I can't get kittens that I have had over 5 months adopted. What people are going to do it let the run loose in the street or just keep the tied to a dog house and god willing someone notice and THEN KCAC will come out and take the dogs. REALLY this is a solution? And YET we can build a tunnel and possibly raise taxes on electric bills, license tabs and even a TOLL? We as a people aren't willing to pay an extra .01 in dog/cat food taxes to help with a spay/neuter bill?

Domestic abuse shelters are also getting hit. Where are those women children and even animals going to go. So when the women gets put in the hospital we pay the bill and yet if she had some place safe to stay/go we WOULDN'T have a hospital bill to pay.

I have no problem paying taxes if my money is being used properly. I would be happy to pay higher taxes to keep domestic abuse shelters opened and kcac, health centers, schools, higher pay for teachers, NOT PAYING for a tunnel.

  2. hammerhead..

the viaduct is not a safe option any longer.. money will have to be spent on some alternative..

i see no reason why we can't do both humane services and the tunnel...

  4. I saw the news release when it first hit the inbox earlier today and it greatly confused me. This is written more like they're making the choice because of the flood fears in south King County rather than the ongoing budget woes:

    Double argh!

Is it OK to quote the relevant bit?
“We have a moral imperative to support these programs,” said Patterson. “... we must maintain funding for those human services that keep our jail populations down and people out of emergency rooms.”
    Seriously?
How is cutting funding by 80 percent 'maintaining funding'?

  6. Yes. Short quotes aren't copyright problems. A paragraph or longer, then we have trouble.

TR, that struck me too when I saw the news story. It seems like they're using the flood zone as a diversion, but I'm not sure how we're supposed to forget that they already announced the impending closure...huh? The piece about Crossroads not accepting owner-surrendered pets either is an added blow. Sadly, I think we'll see a "flood" of dumped pets.

  8. While the flood is a serious threat it is mostly the shortage of money. I know alot of people at KCAC and this is what they said is a nut shell: KCAC is able to run on licensing fees about 4 million dollars, and only used about 1.5 million of funding from the public. So for a shortage of 1.5 million is being shut down?

The flood issue is a HUGE cover up for Dow and the rest of the city counsel for the sloppy job they did in office, "blame the closure on the dam." I don't think so.

  9. blaming the closure on the tunnel doesn't make much more sense...

It's time we all became squeaky wheels and let the king country council know that we don't support shutting down human services.. or animal services... in favor of giving tax breaks and assistance to big businesses...

yes, we need jobs.. but not at the cost of actual services in our county.

Maybe we should just pay more taxes.

  11. not a bad idea.. as long as we get service for our taxes and not more handouts for big businesses..

  12. the rationalization behind closing the King County facility beyond the need to prepare for the possibility of the Green River flood was that the county was not doing a good job and that other private facilities like the humane society would step in and take the overflow and do a better job than King County.

The first challenge has shown us that is not true... and we need to let our King County Council know that we aren't buying any of the rationalizations for closing King County facilities...

but there is a bigger challenge to animal control services in our state than the tunnel...

I-1033, Eiman's initiative... would put an abrupt end to animal control in the entire state... service are the first to go when money gets tight.

Take the time to find I-1033 on your ballot and vote no...

then let's see what we can do to start a political action committee to restore animal control services in King County...
