Please bring some joy to Admiral Way and remove your signs, Joy Anderson! I voted for you! But I am really disappointed that you don't have the courtesy to remove your signs.

  2. I was wondering the same thing Ace. She campaigned as a local, with the ho-made signs...now she needs to cleanup after herself.

    Posted 9 months ago #
  3. Some orphan signs in my neighborhood, too.

A link to this post has just been sent to Joy's campaign e-mail address. Let's see if she responds . . .

Fun Fact: Going by the e-mail address listed on the KC Elections Web site, Joy's full name would seem to be "Joyous."

    Cool!

JayDee, ho-made? Is that supposed to be funny? Clever? It's not.

    Posted 9 months ago #
  5. Sorry KatherineL:

Ho-made as in Home-made. I suspect she did so out of thrift or appeal. No disrespect to anyone involved. Trying to reflect the nature of the signs -- this also implies that there are a limited number of them hence easier to cleanup.

  6. Um, when you paste some crappy photocopied text on some ugly pink posterboard, your signs ARE ho-made. No getting around that.

Disagree. The signs are an eyesore.
However, "ho" is short for whore; that's ugly language with all sorts of connotations.

    Posted 9 months ago #
  8. Glad to see I'm not the only one who has loathed these signs still up after 08/16!!

    Posted 9 months ago #
  9. No, Angelescrest and KatherineL, in this context "ho" does not mean anything other than a corruption of the word "home" in the phrase "home-made". Have you never gone into a roadside diner and seen a sign advertising "ho-made apple pie"? Would you assume the kitchen was staffed by prostitutes? And what do you think Santa Claus is talking about when he issues his customary greeting? Get your own minds out of the gutter and save your politically correct nonsense for a situation where it actually applies.

Don't forget "Ho-ho's" made by Hostess.
    Oh, wait...

The Sensitivity Police is quite active here.

If Joy isn't complaining about being called a ho, why does anyone else care?

Note that the signs are an eyesore and many are illegally placed. Now they're litter. She should be ticketed for littering for each illegally placed and remaining sign.

K-Bear, no, I've never seen an advertisement for ho-made apple pie. If I had, I'd consider it in poor taste.
I Wonder, I was just waiting for someone to come up with the latest version of "You women have no sense of humor."
ItsForrest, do you know that Joy reads the Forum? Her non-response doesn't mean that she wouldn't or doesn't care. There can be a number of reasons not to have heard from her. The fact remains that that particular contraction has ugly sexist and racist overtones.

    Posted 9 months ago #
  13. Seriously, you've never seen the phrase "home-made" spelled that way? I guess you don't get out of West Seattle much, Katherine. Oh, wait, maybe you remember the Ho-Win restaurant? Was that racist and sexist, too? One more time: The "ho" in "ho-made" does not refer to "whores" in any way, shape or form. And it certainly doesn't have any racial implications.

No Katherine, you resolved the "I must find a personal attack in an innocent post" first.

    Posted 9 months ago #
  15. Hmm it seems to me the 'real' issue is political signs that have not been removed post election. If Joy is reading the blog - I would think she would have made arrangements for the signs to be removed by now. If she doesn't perhaps someone who knows her would let her know that the people of WS would appreciate her removing them soon.

you people are funny. an awful lot of ASSumptions being made. THANK you, Joy. Most of the signs are gone. Only one left at Admiral and Garlough......unless I missed something. BTW, I hope you stay involved with Seattle schools, they NEED you. LOVE ♥ your direct and focused approach!!!

  17. Hmmm, maybe it's time for a few of us to make some phone calls? I'll start...

Joy Anderson's signs have become a real public
trash nuisance. As they slowly disinigrate they
become worse. Hers as well as all other polictal signs and outdated garage sales signs should be
traced to the posters address and all should be
fined for littering our public taxpayer streets.

I agree Janet. Those who distribute signs for their campaign are ultimately responsible for removing them. They should be fined one week after the campaign end date.

The antenna are always up... someone is always on PC patrol.... some will look for intent where none was offered, others, will manufacture intent... kiss my grits... go get a hobo sandwich and chill.... "ho" is evolving..police thyself..the "kids" have made the term into anything cheap, tawdry, .. it all started with Santa Claus... he was sorting toys into his bags... boy, ho, ho, ho, boy, boy, ho... ho ho ho ho! Get a grip. Don't like it? Don't use it. ... looks "ho like" to you and want to say it... shout it out. Land ho! (where ya go when ya die as a martyr?)

"I guess you don't get out of West Seattle much"--wow, not funny or very nice. On the other hand, "Hey hey! Ho ho! Expired signs have got to go!" is pretty funny...

I'm a pretty well-traveled person and have never seen a "Ho-made Pie" sign. If I had, I probably would have made some dorky remark like, "WHO have you got working on the pies???"

Knowing the slang now, I'll choose not to use it because it can be easily taken out of context and potentially offend those nuns who so lovingly hand-made all the baked goods being sold to raise money for the orphanage. Yeah, not going to use that term there...

As for Santa and his Ho's--well, that's between him and Mrs. Claus.

  25. I would like to say that for most candidates who are not progressing to the general election, signs came down relatively quickly after the election--in this, at least, the "losers" are winners! I think the campaigns are getting better at tidying up afterwards--I don't know if its because the fine is being enforced, or some people with civic pride are taking matters into their own hands (although Ms. Anderson's signs being left up argue against this), or some other reason. But I like it!

  26. "I'm a pretty well-traveled person and have never seen a 'Ho-made Pie' sign."

Perhaps your travels did not take you to the vast interior of this country, where such signs surely do exist. They may also advertise things like "fresh potatoe salad", and they'll be chock full of misplaced apostrophes.

KB: Ah, perhaps I have not eaten at the same restaurants you have. I tend to use the same philosophy as Blue Highways author William Least-Heat Moon and judge diners by the number of calendars on their walls... You are probably at classier joints than I.

Also, you CERTAINLY don't need to leave West Seattle to find examples of misplaced apostrophe's!

  29. ho-made is a sign of the times gang
    our language is under assault
and not by those who would not be PC
unless of course they comprise the crowd too lazy to care

i shudder to think what will pass as communication in the post text age

  30. JoB, I recently signed a legal contract that contained the phrase, "comprised of". When I asked if it could be corrected before I signed it, the lawyer said the whole contract would have to be reissued, the other parties who had signed already would have to re-sign, at time and cost to them, the law office had used this language for years, and it was "legally enforceable". I confess I caved, and signed, albeit with disgust.

  31. Drove from Alki this morning to Burien and saw 3 signs still up -- 1 on Admiral and 2 on Fauntleroy right by the ferry dock. Still some work to do Ms. Anderson.

  32. Hey, "sexting" and "retweet" are in the OED. Language evolves. It's what happens. It's okay.

(That said, I initially had a negative reaction to "ho-made" too; I've only seen that designation used in one sense in English, and it ain't a flattering one. Thanks for the context, those who have spent more time in the U.S. interior than I!)

    Posted 8 months ago #
  33. My two cents worth:

I grew up with hearing/seeing the term "ho-made" used just as JayDee did in her original post.

When I read it that was the first thing I though of: home made. No big deal.

The other interpretation is understandable (and one I just learned of from this thread) however it’s all in the mind of the reader, just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Should you wish to read it with a negative connotation, so be it, but you’re bringing it on yourself.
