I didn't eat that salmonberry, but I could've. So could've Mike, because it's just a few hundred feet from his new digs.
Anyway, this muse gets me thinkin' about the old koan that goes: If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?
To which I counter-koan: What if a tree falls and there's a tape recorder there?
—Is the tape recorder then ipso facto transformed into a "somebody"? Or is the tape recorder merely an extension of somebody's ear?
If the answer to that last one is "yes" then I have a follow-up question:
If you're an Old Testament Christian and somebody smites your tape recorder, are you then allowed to smite one of his ears?
Supposing you could smite any part of your enemy's body you wanted to. Would you smite his tape recorder?
Or would you gouge out his iPod instead?
