F16CrewChiefMemberMy personal opinion on the situation in Israel is pretty mixed. Considering the long history in that region, dating back to b.c., my gut says neither the Palestinians or the Israelis deserve that stretch of land. Just my opinion on that specific topic though.
But my real question is, Americans? Why do Americans, especially on social media feel the need to take a side? My Facebook news feed is lit up with both sides propaganda. What does a person born and raised in Seattle, or anywhere else here in the U.S. have to do with Israel? I know all the religious mambo-jambo, but is there more to why American folks feel so connected to Israel? Or is it just more people dieing in the name of God stuff? I’m getting a little frustrated with all of it.

Because the U.S. give a substantial amount of money to Israel. The Israeli government is the largest recipient of US financial aid in the world.

JanSParticipantwell, I have a friend in Reading, PA…last name Leisawitz..and she is constantly posting about Israel, and how much she supports and loves Israel. Jewish people have a definite connection, so religious views pay a big part of why many Americans support what they are doing. They have always felt all that land belongs to them …promised.
On the other hand , I see terrible things happening on both sides…the Israeli bombing of innocent people in a hospital in Gaza, the Israeli bombing of a “neutral” UN School where innocent people have taken sanctuary from the ongoing “war”. I don’t get that, I don’t understand that, I think it’s wrong on so many levels, and paints a very disturbing picture about leaders in Israel. This has been going on for thousands of years…will it really ever end? Maybe…when Israel has destroyed Palestine completely. In the meantime, it will go on and on. How many “peace talks” have there been? How much has stuck?

F16CrewChiefMemberI do apologize too if I offend people with my topic. Like I said, I am frustrated.
They’ve been fighting for over 2000 years about this land and will continue. I’m just curious why Americans that have no roots in the matter feel so connected to this?
Where I’m going with this is, I think with the way media reports, many Americans are conditioned to view Israel or any news topic for that matter, as if it is a sports team or “Team Jacob” and “Team Edward”. Many people have no idea why there is fighting in Israel right now, they just pick a side and hit the keyboard with their cheer leading.
United we stand, divided we fall…
It feels sometimes we are dividing ourselves here in American and media and social-media are the tools being used to ignite the divide.

JanSParticipantI do not really quite understand the reasons…as I have no skin in the game. I respect that there are religions involved, and it’s more than just “churching”…it’s heritage, right or wrong.
I do not really get anyone who will intentionally bomb innocents, in hospitals, in safe houses, etc….we have done it in the wars that we’ve been involved in…I simply don’t understand the “why’s” of all that. That is what I would speak out about…..that is why I was against Iraq, Afghanistan, etc….

skeeterParticipantWhat I don’t understand is why the U.S. continues to give money to Israel even though Israel continues to bulldoze Palestinian homes and build settlements on Palestinian land.
Year 1:
Israel: U.S., give us money so we can protect ourselves.
U.S.: Okay, here is $3billion. But please stop building on Palestinian land.
Israel: Thanks for the money. We will continue building on Palestinian land.
Year 2:
Israel: U.S., give us money so we can protect ourselves.
U.S.: Okay, here is $3billion. But please stop building on Palestinian land.
Israel: Thanks for the money. We will continue building on Palestinian land.
Year 3:
Israel: U.S., give us money so we can protect ourselves.
U.S.: Okay, here is $3billion. But please stop building on Palestinian land.
Israel: Thanks for the money. We will continue building on Palestinian land.
You guys probably see the pattern.
We give Israel all this money every year yet they continue stealing land. You’d think the U.S. could simply tell them to stop stealing land or else no more money.

happywalkerParticipantI say it’s about time this subject came up…,my thought was that Israel is in a strategic location for us. But I’m with the rest of yall on this one. I think we just need to stay out of it this time, but I feel we’re “bed partners” now. Too much history backing them now to get out of this mess.

Ms. SparklesParticipantI think we got “in bed” out of guilt for comming late to WWII and have been tangled in the sheets every since. We’ve been in bed so long now we (think we)can’t get out.

JoBParticipanti think Ms Sparkles is right
not to mention that having a friendly military powerhouse in the middle east works for America’s oil interests..
