Interesting article about coyotes in the Seattle Times today...

I thought I would pass this on, since a lot of people seem to believe coyotes are harmless. Despite the fact that they say coyote attacks are rare because coyotes are usually "shy," the coyotes in Schmitz Park are NOT shy. They have been seen hanging out in people's yards, sleeping on their decks, and seem to have little fear remaining of humans. Aside from having eaten many, many neighborhood cats and dogs, these animals are a threat to children, and maybe even adults too.

  2. it's so easy to forget that we share our world with the wild critters who were here before us.. and they are rapidly adapting to living in the spaces we don't pay much attention to.

We spent the week on the long beach peninsula.. and saw a coyote hanging out in someone's drive... just beyond the reach of the chained dogs, we barely missed hitting a black bear that crossed the road in front of us near Nahcotta on the eastern side of the peninsula... it scurried between two houses and into the woods beyond, i saw a young buck in downtown Long Beach that scampered back into a wooded lot, and of course we saw roadside deer and the elk herd near Camp Rilea on the Oregon side... huge herd this year.

It's just not a good idea to hike alone...

  4. From said article:

"It's very unusual and is not likely to be repeated," Bancroft said. "We shouldn't assume that coyotes are suddenly going to become the big bad wolf
