Insistent Door Knock

  1. Today, about 4pm, I heard very insistent pounding on my door. I thought it was my teen daughter who pounds like that when she comes home from school and has forgotten her key. I ran to my back door, then heard the doorbell ring. I ran to the front door and saw a white male, late 20s-early 30's, briskly walking down the street.

At first I thought he was delivering or leaving a leaflet on my door. Nothing there.

The more I think about it he may have been checking to see if anyone was home, possibly to break in? Maybe he heard me open and close my back door and dashed.

Just an fyi. I live between Andover/Dakota on 34th.

  3. Possibly we should not worry so much much and read more of Poe and the Tell Tale Heart?

The same thing happened to me except he went so far as to open my screen door, NOT knock and instead scare myself and the dog half to death. My neighbor said he was a deaf man selling orange pamphlets on how to communicate with deaf people. I may have the story mixed up a bit since I didn't buy the flier, but that's what I know...no prowler in training at least!

  7. I emailed my experience to my immediate block watch neighbors, and the 3 captains of our surrounding blocks.

One of the neighbors on my street emailed back that he had the same door knocking, or rather 'pounding' too.

Weird experience, and we are all now more aware and will keep our eyes open.

Lisa - it's really scary when that happens, especially when you are alone. I had a similar experience a few years ago and it turned out the guy was a rapist who had been stalking the neighborhood during the day when women are home alone.

You did the smart thing - although don't open the door next time until you're sure:)

  9. A few years ago one of our neighbors was at home alone. It was a warm summer day and she had left the front door open as many of us did at that time. She was in the kitchen when a strange man appeared in the hallway. She had presence of mind to open her basement door and shout, "Hal, there's a stranger up here to see you!" He took off on a dead run and dropped her purse and cash on the way...

Quick thinking rules! And does a way better job than keeping a gun and trying to shoot someone in your home. IMO

  11. I wish we lived where it was safe enough to open the door w/o checking and leave the front door open.

I'm proud of my neurosis though it has kept me safe thus far. I have my alarm system on 24/7. You can't be too careful when you live with so many predators all around you.
