   There's a squirrel up our tree making distressful noises and appears to have an injured front leg. He's holding his leg up and I can see some blood. What to do, if anything??? Hate to see the poor guy suffer.

   Keep in mind that our gray urban squirrels are mostly an invasive species (the native gray squirrel has a very limited distribution in Washington state, which does not include this part of the Puget Sound basin). Wildlife rehab centers would probably be more interested in using their limited resources to treat injured natives.    I pretty sure it's a gray, non-native and I'm hoping maybe he's not hurt at all. I looked it up and it sounds just like a mating call. The blood could be from the female?? All the squirrels are running around all crazy though. Fun to watch!

   A couple of years ago I came across an injured squirrel while walking my dog (a jack russell, who goes nuts for squirrels) in Hiawatha park. Crows were starting to attack it, and I felt horrible. I ended up calling animal control to find out what to do, found a box, caught it (nearly impossible with a jack russell) and took it inside to the community center where animal control came to pick it up. I am not sure if they usually do that kind of thing, but they can point you in the right direction. The squirrel was making horrible sounds too. :(

   wow...great job getting that squirrel with a jack russell. Those things get the strength of a pit bull when they see a squirrel.

   Alkicabcompany - It was quite an ordeal and I don't know if I'd be able to do it again, nor would I want to. Both my jack russells live for squirrels. Luckily I only had one with me, he was bouncing up at the box, higher than I even knew he could bounce. The squirrel of course was freaking out, I thought it would break through the box and bite us all. I wish it had been caught on camera.
