Injured animal - what to do?

  1. This is from the WSB Facebook page: "My boyfriend just got back from a walk and said that there is a hurt raccoon (limping around with a bad hind leg) at 37th ave and Ida st in the Gatewood area. We don't have the means to catch and transport it anywhere. But maybe someone else would want to trap it and take it to a wildlife facility."

Animal experts - what do you recommend? Last time I recommended someplace for someone to call, I seem to recall that they said, no, organization X is better (or something like that) ... TR

  5. i can get the racoon I have huge trap and I am experienced in netting them, when cornered. Seattle animal shelter WILL NOT COME OUT TO get injured wildlife, neither will paws, or sarvey.

you have to get the wildlife and bring it to them

Hope you can get it Hammerhead. About 15 years ago we had a very injured raccoon pass through our yard and we could get no one, no agency to help. Poor thing crawled off and died somewhere in agony.
So glad there are now people like you around to help the helpless.
    Many blessing on you.

  8. Hopefully people around 37th and Ida will keep their eyes open for the injured racoon and give Hammerhead a call. She is right, no other agency will come out to help.

    Hammerhead - question for you....

(not trying to thread jack) our "wonderful neighbors" decided that they were going to trap raccoons to deter them from passing through their yard.

After a not so welcome meeting between our whole building and the next door tenant the raccoon was released from the trap X hours later...is this against the law for civilians to do?

  10. Ok if I am reading this right: the raccoon was trapped at point A and then just released at point A?

Or was the raccoon taken some place else and released, this part is illegal.

Now if these "humans" think that trapping a raccoon will deter the said raccoon from going through their yard, is laughable. As we know they have every right to be in our backyards as we are in THEIRS.

To bad we can't relocate humans.

You are correct, the raccoon was trapped at point A and released at point A.

I thought there might be some municipal code protecting them or something you knew of. I thought I may have heard that it was illegal, but thought you may know for sure.

We were pissed, and told the neighbor we would call the police next time anything like this happened and to put away the traps.

Just wanted confirmation that calling the police for this would be a good call.

Back to your regularly scheduled post.

IIRC, the trapping is legal (so to get medical help, it would be ok), but it is illegal to either re-locate a raccoon from point A to point B or kill a raccoon. Sound right, HH? I suspect if the neighbors hadn't intervened, HunterG, a law would have been broken!

Anyone know if the OP's injured raccoon been spotted again?

  13. Yes, to relocate/kill, but that does not stop people from doing that or other things for that matter.

Hunter G, don't bother calling the police, while sad, god they do have more important things to deal with, even I understand that. Hell call me instead, yes I am SERIOUS.

    This animal was PERFECTLY healthy.

They just trapped it to trap it left it in that cage for over 6 hours - something makes me think that if we wouldn't have intervened the little guy would have been killed by our unstable male neighbor.

  15. When I left the house, I drove around the 37th/Ida area (not far from us) to take a quick look. Did not see anything. Not likely the poor thing would have just been sitting on the sidewalk or the street, but I tried. I also did DM this thread info to the person who had posted on our wall. Sorry for the red alert, and thanks for the info ... we get all sorts of types of "what do I do about ..." questions and in most cases we have the appropriate info, but not always. - TR
