influx of racoons?

  1. The past week I have had a run in with 3 racoons. Two hefty ones scampered across the street near my home on 34th and Graham the other night and another one I almost hit as it ran out in front of my car on 35th somewhere between Juneau and Alaska last night. What's up with all the racoons??

  2. Haven't seen any round here for a while. But certainly they'd be scrambling for food and water in the deep freeze ...

Funny you should mention that, came face to face with an old friend (there's a raccoon without a tail that gets around the admiral area a lot) this morning. Apparently my lab isn't a fan - he didn't even bark at him, but instead came running back into the house and refused to do his business.

  4. we saw a big one in Arbor Heights last week. He was missing his tail (!) and he was HUGE. Broad daylight, and certainly wasn't afraid of us at all.

I live a few blocks north of the OP and there's always a family of 5 raccoons around. They live behind my neighbor's house and frequently dine on my neighbor's outside cat food and garbage. We seen them grow up from tiny raccoons to large garbage-tearing monsters! And my, they are bold. I had to chase them away from our stoop with a broom. On plus side, they seem to coexist nicely with the million stray cats that live in our neighborhood.

  6. They are looking for water and food more than anything.

  7. Aww raccoons are so cute, that is until you contract Baylisascaris.

    Great target practice.

  9. One can avoid contracting Baylisascaris procyonis by refraining from eating raccoon poo. It can be a pretty big lifestyle change for some, but please, think of the children.

There goes my app for the pot luck. I was going to bring bacon wrapped baylisascaris balls. <back to the drawing board>

  12. I have a tiny pond and stream in my back yard. The pond is frozen over but the stream continues to run. Twice yesterday a raccoon came and sat in the stream. He/She was drinking water, but mostly just sitting in the stream... moving really slow. Finally left, but slowly. Seemed odd.
