If I hang it, will they come?

We have wonderful hummingbirds in the spring, summer, and early fall who frequent my garden voraciously. But I haven't seen any in a few months. So I hung a feeder (with BRIGHT red nectar in it) in a fairly prominent location on the side of my house. It's been two days, and no takers. Do you think they'll eventually find it? I am worried I waited too long into the winter and they've given up on us!

Many of us have been feeding them all winter. i had four this morning. late last year there were many posts about it:

Also, your feeder may have been visited and you just missed it. Likely a single hummingbird will "claim" your feeder, then sit off somewhere and guard it.

Incidentally, the red color in the nectar is completely unnecessary and probably harmful. As long as there is some red coloring on the feeder itself, they will find it. (Four parts boiling water, one part granulated white sugar - fill feeders when nectar cools).

  3. Since the summer and winter hummingbirds are different species (and thus different individuals), they might not know to look in your yard right away. It might take awhile for them to notice it as they're probably sticking close to someone else's feeder.

Be persistent. Eventually one (or more) will find it and greatly appreciate it. Don't forget to put fresh food out every week. It has become a Sunday morning ritual for me and I have been rewarded greatly.
