  4. OK, I'll bite. Why is it a waste of time?

  5. The New Year always reminds me that we can start fresh again..that we get do overs, another chance..at whatever you want another chance at. Yes, you can get that any day, I suppose, but there's something about the freshness of it that I like.

Heck, I'm just glad that I'm around for another year ;-)

I hate NY too. Don't see any reason to celebrate that I have one fewer year left on the planet. Don't need an artificial moment in time to make changes in my life when I need to.

But at least I get a day off.

Can you say "Amateur Night." I stayed home because there are 300 plus days out of the year to get your hangover going. I had a few beers at Northgate Mall with my cousins while their wives went shopping for a few hours in the afternoon. Going out on NYE is painful. You can't get a cab back, the cops are all out and waiting for you if you're driving, and not too mention it's very pretentious with the artificial well wishers. Now this weekend is the best time to go out because everyone is too hungover, and/or has no money left. And by the way, you'll actually get service. Been there done that as they say.

  9. I stayed in too - usually do. I celebrated the anniversary of my friend's death. I welcomed 2009 with open arms, and like JoB, see it as a fresh start.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are for some hallmark holidays. But I see the season as a reminder to stop and appreciate everything you have, be grateful you were on the planet one more year, spend time with family, and actually TELL them you love them. Not everyone needs the reminder, but many do.

Now that can't be all bad...

I hate New Years because my a-hole neighbors light off fireworks for hours. They do the same thing for the 4th of July. And we're not talking fire crackers...we're talking big ones that light up my entire bedroom!

  11. you can rail against the night or you can join in the joy.

    it's always your choice.

    i choose joy.

I think it's a pretty lame holiday too- the pressure to have this amazingly fantastic night, dealing with annoying drunk people, and then the fear of getting home without having a DUI driver hit you. It all seems so fake to me, just like Valentine's Day. You shouldn't need a holiday to be thankful for being alive or telling someone you love them. Do it every day!

  13. m, that is an excellent sentiment.

Jiggers, that is exactly what my dad always called NYE, and I have to say that I agree.

I find it odd to declare NYE celebrations a "waste of time." Seems one should only be deciding what is a waste of time for themselves. If you don't like an activity, then don't do it. Deciding that it is a waste of time for others is self-righteous.
I do empathize with pbgirl423. That does infringe on your own rights of a peaceful house for sleeping. Methinks I would have called the police.

  15. The time is what you make of it, let it be a waste and it will be.
