I spoke with my sister and a friend out in Virginia and New York respectively, safe so far. The path of the hurricane is not clearly known as it's just crawling up the East Coast and not knowing if it will turn inland, but it will cause major flooding and cause billions in damage when it's all done. I myself have lived through two major hurrricanes, one was a Catergory 5, both in Hawai'i.

My folks live near Boston - will be speaking with my mom Sunday - Irene should be in New England by then - hoping for the best for all touched by this storm....

My cousin is NC and has been mandatory evacuated. She's in a hotel in Raleigh with some other Military Wives. My Aunt works for an Insurance Company and is on her way there now to set up disaster relief. I am sitting on the edge of my seat praying and hoping that Irene hits sparingly.

I'm originally from NYC, so all my family and friends are scattered along the path of the hurricane from South Carolina to Massachusetts, and a friend on a cruise ship going from the Caribbean to New Jersey as we speak, so they're all in my thoughts. The current path brings it right over Long Island just east of my sister. Never thought I'd see the day they'd evacuate parts of Manhattan and shut down the subway system in advance of a storm.

my folks are outside Philly. Will be speaking with them tomorrow. I'm sure it will be interesting there, but not like over New Jersey. Only Tropical storm warnings for their area...lots and lots of wind and rain :(

Hurricane Irene slammed into Virginia and is heading northeast. Here's a live video stream of the White House.Look at the wind whipping everything around her.

The pictures of the flooding is amazing and devestating.

Great job by the states and locals getting prepared.

Kman..listening to people grouse about the "overreaction"of officials is amazing, isn't it? If they hadn't given all this warning, and the storm had been different just by a little bit, more than the 38 who have perished already would have died, and the damage would be many more billions than it is now. I agree, kudos to those who asked people to be prepared, and the locals who listened. Sometimes they're damned if they do, and damned if they don't. Le sigh.

Agree, Kootch.
Kudos to the state and local officials who actually did their jobs rather than wait for the feds (we know how slow acting the feds can be).
Good to see people taking responsibility, even if they did err on the side of caution.

Smitty...
psst..
you do know the locals have to actually call in the feds if and when they decide they need them... do't you?Posted 8 months ago #
