How did you pick your pet's name?

Interesting link to a survey of the top 10 pet names and top ten oddest names of 1/2 million pets in the US:

    http://www.petsugar.com/2673741

What is your pet's name and how did you pick it?

My current pets are Katherine (dog), Mr. B (dog), Sashi (dog), Gaston (cat) and Max (bird). Only Max is on the top ten list.

Katherine was chosen because her doggie husband's name was Spencer and I decided that they were lovers like Tracy & Hepburn.

Mr. B was a rescue named Bandit who cringed and hid everytime we used the Bandit name, so we decided that he needed a little respect and shortened it to Mr. B, which he loves.

Sashi is a dog I rescued while living in Korea - I wanted a Korean name for her, but couldn't find anything that rang a bell until someone asked me how much I paid to get her away from the bad owner - I replied "45,000 won", which is "Sa-ship-o" in Korean. So I decided to name her that and her nickname is Sashi. Of course the Koreans think it's hilarious that I named my dog "45".

Gaston is my partner's cat that she got while in culinary school. And Max is an adoption from a friend who named him that and I don't know why.

  2. I love the unsual names at that link!

My cat (above) is Olias. Jon Anderson, the lead singer of the band Yes (which is my husband and my favorite group) has a very old solo album called Olias of Sunhillow, so that's where we got the name from. His nicknames, however, are just silly names I come up with for god-knows-what reason. The latest names are Pumpkin Buddy, FuzzyButt, Fluff-for-Brains, Finster Baby and probably half a dozen other names, some of which aren't suitable for a family audience. :)

  4. Gwydion is a trickster figure in Welsh mythology who goes about in disguise and gets up to all kinds of mischief. Think Gandalf with a malicious streak.

My cat never got the word, though. He's sweet as pie, and afraid of dust.

Bluestein - took one look at him and said "you're Bluestein". As for Greenspan, he took a few weeks. I finally settled on Greenspan because of his green eyes, long length (span), and very reserved personality.

My nickname for Bluestein is Bluey and occasionally Insane Clown Kitty. My neighbor calls him Bighead, his spouse calls him Blueballs. My nickname for Greenspan is Spanner and occasionally Circus Cat, my neighbor calls him Smallhead, his spouse calls him Greenbean.

They don't know what the heck to answer to.

  6. our first dog was cassiopeia (cassie) after the constellation my dad noticed driving home with her trying to decide what to name her. now we have georgie, who was named georgia peach and nicknamed georgie by the breeder. when we got her we named her curious georgie.

i got my cat from a friend when we were reading The Lord of the Rings. his name is sam (samwise gamgee) and is as loyal as a cat can be.

Splatter (dog) - she was hit by a car.

Abby (cat) - she had an abscess when found in a park. Was either Abby or Wormy (she had ringworm too).

Popeye (cat) - he only had one fully developed eye.

Ewok (cat) - he was born with some facial deformities that made hom look like one, although he looked and breathed better after surgeries.

Tripp (cat) - he was hit by a car (?) and a leg had to be amputated. Tripp was a variation on 'tripod'.

Before I get attacked for all the bad things that befell these animals...they were injured/sick BEFORE I got them.

  8. Missy (Canine) came with the name from the Tacoma Humane Society. Felines - Harry (short for Harrison Pee Cat). My wife named him. Sally (When Harry met Sally) My wife named her when she got her from the neighbor as a kitten. Aretha (Sally's mum) who was originally owned by the neighbor then we took her in. She was from a shelter in Mt. Vernon. She is black and very vocal so they named her after Aretha Franklin. I just call her the Harlot. Finally, Brother Tom. The old man. He was my cat named by a 4 year child because he was going to be the child's brother and because boy cats were called tom cats. A tri-color basset hound, three black cats and a big fat hairy orange cat. Kamsa-hamneeda.

I love this topic! All of my animals came with their names, except my dog, Guido. I adopted him from a shelter 7 years ago. He was a stray who they had named "Jack", since he is a Jack Russell Terrier. One of my all time favorite movie's is the Italian film "Life is Beautiful". The main character is Guido, and being a Jack Russell "Jack" (now Guido) had plenty of spunk, so I thought it was a perfect name. It still fits him perfectly.

  11. Our Dog Lula is named so because we were going to get another female dog that was a Catahoula hound. We thought Lula the Catahoula sounded good. In the end we ended up with a different dog from the pound, but just liked the name. The other dog Al, was named ALex from his previous owner. We tend to think that AL and Lula sounds like and old lounge act.

I've had birds before named "Figaro" and "Napoleon" - the latter being a miniature parrot who thought he was much bigger than he was. He couldn't say Napoleon, so he would run around and say "Happy Nappy, Happy Nappy".

Currently we call Katharine "Miss Priss" because she's still the dominatrix among the rest of the animals and thinks she's all that. We also have a myriad of nicknames for them all depending on the day and activity - most of them are not appropriate for public dissemination:) Our bird Max came with the habit of humping socked feet, so my Canadian friend nicknamed him the "sock **cker"!

  13. Cat: black shorthair named Janis, after Janis Joplin. She has a throaty husky whiskey-tinged meow, something like this: OOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW (baby!!!). My 80-yr-old wise-guy dad calls her Snowball. He named his teeny tiny weenie dog PeeWee, for all the obvious reasons.

When I was little we had a rescue cat named Sarah and Sarah went under the couch one day and came out a Sam. LOL! We didn't know at the time that we got her that it was a he. So after that all our cats became kitty. Mom figures that since most of they were strays that if we gave them a name they would be even more confused about who they were. So we had old kitty, new kitty, male kitty (he was so dumb he would sit in front of the tv and watch tennis). Then we had little big kitty and big little kitty. This came about because the older cat was smaller then the young cat. Now we have one cat she is a rescue kitty (from friends and family) she was originally named bunny because when she walks she holds out her left paw and kind of hops. She was attached by a dog that bit through the bone but they were able to save the leg. When she runs she runs full out and seems to almost be like a jack rabbit. So anyway the cats are all one form of kitty. I don't know if I will ever call another cat a name or not. :)

I just got a new addition to the house tonight! He's a 4 month old short-haired tuxedo. His previous owner named him Oslo but mostly called him Cat. I've been calling him Ozzy since we got home though. We'll have to see what sticks. I'm also open to suggestions...

My first dog Sam (AKA Sambo, Mr. Sam Sam, and Sambo-rooni-rooni) just seemed like Sam to me. It is still painful to think about him. My method of dealing with that is to force myself to concentrate on the dogs I have right now, since dogs focus on "right now" and they epitomize "life is for the living."

Bernie was named by my best friend, and her full name (never used) was Bernadette.

Ender had several origins for his name:
1.) My hope that he would help me end my sorrow after Sam died.
2.) His propensity to occasionally spin in circles.
3.) The Orson Scott Card sci-fi novelette "Ender's Game." I liked the name.

Since then, all my dogs have kept the name they came with. They have all been rescue dogs.

  21. His name was 'Ozzy' when we got him from the shelter, probably because of his need to wear black all the time.
The wife always wanted a lab named 'Larry', so that's what stuck.
She also wanted a dog named 'Bob Barker', thankfully that never happened.

All of ours have come with rescue names that we kept. When I was a kid though, we had a dog named Chu (a Chu-ee long before Star Wars) because she was born near Alaska's Chugach Mountain Range. Should I be disturbed that I know a lot of humans with names on the top 10 dog list? At least I haven't met any from the oddest list. Maybe I should give Hollywood some time...they might be good for one.

  24. Well, we have two of the most common covered :) When my husband and I were dating I had a cat and so did he. Mine was named Bea (she was a little ball of tuxedo fluff cat when I got her) and it just seems to fit. His cat was named Alexander Sox but called Alex for short. He was another tuxedo cat but short-haired and with white "socks" on all of his paws.

When we moved away to Chicago my husband brought a new kitten into the fold and we figured we had A and B so might as well stick with the theme, our newest edition, a beautiful chocolate tabby was named Chloe :)

Finally, when we got our dog (picture shown in avatar) at the humane society in Denver they had given her a name of "big belly" which I really disliked. Besides she was still a puppy and likely to grow out of that name. She was renamed Daisy and we think it suits her perfectly. As you can see, she does not have a big belly either :)

I started out with a feisty kitten I called Scrapper, for obvious reasons. She got pregnant before I realized she was old enough and I found myself with a litter. The calico was called, unimaginatively, Calico. The little blonde male was Dutchboy. And the runt of the litter was Little Bit. Nineteen years later, when they were all gone, I got two kittens from a neighbor, a marmalade male and little tabby who was the runt. My vet at Lien Animal Clinic already had a OJ (for Orange Juice) as an office cat, so mine became Citrus. The little tabby put her bigger brother firmly into place. Murphy Brown on TV was then a role model for a strong independent woman, so she's Murphy. The name confuses people. Even though she has a sweet, feminine face, everyone calls her "he."

First of all, I'm amazed that any of us has a cat who answers to anything. How'd you do that?

The Katskys are: Noam Katsky (articulate, opinionated, vocal, leftist cat), Roada Katsky (named roadkill by her original rescuer -- found as a kitten on I5 traffic at rush hour--we didn't really want to explain that name to our grandkids) and Spot Katsky (because he's a spotted cat.) His original name was Hercule Pawrot Katsky but I didn't figure there was any possibility he'd answer to that.

  27. We also choose two syllable names for dogs because they respond to them better...

Our last four have been japanese breeds so they have had japanese names.. and they are rescues who had been named before... so i spent time with a japanese American dictionary...

Kita.. a female Akita came with her name.. which means north... it suited her.

Imoto.. she was an Akita german shepherd puppy we rescued from a puppy mill gone bad... he thought she didn't look enough akita to sell and he was already on the short list at the shelter.. so he was going to drown her... We named her little sister in japanese... She quickly became became eeee moto .. which made all our japanese friends laugh... as i guess that is how the name is often perverted for rambunctious little sisters in japan:)

    They were good dogs...

The little red shiba who doesn't trust people was called Moose and he became Yuki.. keeping the oo sound and naming him snow for the season we found him... and as it turns out.. his favorite weather.

the little white shiba who wants to let all other dogs know who is boss was Marci and she became Mochi.. little rice ball. if only we had known how appropriate that name would be.. her nickname.. moochie.. given to her by the staff at the kennel she boards at is even more appropriate...

  29. Something I'll contribute too!

Cat-- Easter from a tori amos song...
Cat-- Magnolia James She likes to stand in the basement corner facing the wall singing her Jazz tunes

Dog-- Chesty La Rue (Rue for short) From a simpsons episode, I think her original name was molly, and then the pound named her Shadow...poor girl was abused, she needed a good strong name like chesty la rue.

Dog-- Mortimer Nathanial Mortimer from Arsenic and old lace...nathanial because well, its long.

Turtle-- Piotr Sadly, she was named as a boy...oopsie, its not easy to figure out the sex of a false map turtle when young though!

  30. This is such a happy, friendly post! Yeah!

Our dog Jake was named after another happy, friendly dog I had met named Jake. I have since realized there are many many Jake dogs out there.

Melbrey or Mel dog was named after an imposter lord in Faulty Towers. I feel bad about that since he is a very insecure dog.

    Our four cats

Basil was named after Basil Faulty from Faulty Towers and it was quite a good name when he was a naughty kitten and we were constantly yelling his name when he caused trouble. He has mellowed into a wise sage in his old age.

Melody was at the shelter when I worked there and she had so many health problems no one wanted to adopt her. I named her the prettiest name I could think of so some one would want her. In the end no one did and I feel in love with her.

Rudy was named Pirate when I got him because he had bad eye problems and was always squinting. That just seemed like a bad name for him so he became Rudy-just because.

Raven our newest kitten went nameless for many days because we could not decide on a name. Finally me, my partner and our son wrote lists of all the names we liked and Raven was something we could all agree on. And he is black and very wise and cunning. We like adding things to Raven, such as Raven Warmbottom in the photo above. Or Raven Starfield for white spot on the tip of his tail. My son still calls him itty bitty kitty committee:-)

Our dog is Cupcake. We originally tried to adopt a Yorkie puppy from a shelter that was already named Cupcake (the kids loved the name) but they wouldn’t let us have a small dog puppy because the kids are under 12 yrs old. When we bought our puppy from a breeder the name stuck.

As a kid we had a Cockapoo named Muffin and when she had puppies we tried to call them Blueberry, Strawberry and Bran but it just didn’t stick but Tipper, Fifi and BooBoo did. We also had a cat named Fluffaluffagus (Fluffy for short) after Mr. Snuffleupagus on Sesame Street and a cat named Ruffles.

Every cat that my grandparents ever had (and there were many) was named Sam.

  32. This is a fun post!
Cats: Ophelia - everyone thinks it's from Hamlet but she is named for the song by The Band.
Cleo - I found her in a tree in my friends yard on my birthday. I'm a leo so I named him Leo, then discovered she was a she so she's Cleo.
Dog: Jasper. I looked at a puppy named Jasper through the group Rescue Every Dog. That adoption fell through but I really liked the name so when I adopted my dog I re-named him Jasper. His original name was Eli (he was from the E litter - all the pups had names beginning with E). He was only 9 weeks old so I don't think he minded the name change!

  33. This was such a great post idea mellaw! We have three boys, and all are rescues...

Bandit - Siberian Husky - he was named by the Husky rescue over in Plain, WA that found him. He was found abandoned by his previous owners in the Wenatchee National Forest. Those owners were found by the Husky rescue, as Bandit was microchipped, but they declined to take him back because they said he was constantly running away and he was more work than they wanted in a dog. We think he was probably abused by them...grrr! The Husky rescue named him Bandit because he was always getting away and trying to run free from them. Since we've had him for near to five years now, he’s only run from us twice, and only in that first year. He just needed a solid loving home I think, because all he wants to do now is sit by us and be petted and loved. Bandit as a name suited him (plus at 3.5 yrs it was a little late we thought to change it on him), and his many nicknames include Bandito Mosquito Quito, the Mosquito, and Pumpkin.

Logan - Dutch Shepherd and Akita mix - he was found on 1-90 off on the shoulder by Sammamish as a 10 week old puppy. He was taken to the King County Humane Society in Factoria, where we adopted him when he was about 13 weeks old. They figure he was the runt of the litter and his mom abandoned him. The shelter named him Logan, and when we got him despite many tries at other names, he only responded to Logan! Awww, my baby was only 15lbs then, and now at almost 3 yrs old he's near 100lbs! And, he is still the baby of the family :). His many nicknames include Loganito, lil baby, booger, and Loggie.

Jax - Chihuahua - Jax is a rescue from the Seattle Animal Shelter in Ballard. He was on their list for euthanasia that week if a foster home or adoption didn't become available for him. We went in there to look at the dogs with my sister for her to find one, and when my husband saw this shaking little tiny 6lb dog in a corner of the kennel, he told me we had to take him home! Once I found out about his situation should he not be adopted, I agreed. Jax was found in South Seattle on the street by a police officer. He had no tags, no microchip, and was not very adept at walking. The shelter thought he was probably a lap or purse dog that never got out for walks or exercise much. As he didn't have a name, we were able to go all out in naming him. We tried Tripod, Flamingo (he has this odd peculiarity of standing on just three leg with one leg tucked up under him), Sarge, Captain, Peanut. Nothing stuck. So we just picked a short, fast name that he might respond too more easily, and it worked. Now Jax is one of the big boys. No more purse dog for him! He loves nothing more than playing with his 80lb+ big brothers and wrestling or going for long walks (just not in the snow we found out!). He is also goes by Jaxy, peanut (he looks like one!), and little boy. My husband for some reason calls him Q.

We happened across a stray running in the rain after our first dinner at JAk's. We hadn't intended on keeping him, but there were no responses to our 'Found Dog' signs, plus he was a senior smooth fox terrier who was deaf and had signs of neglect and abuse. He became very attached to us, as we did he. We committed to keeping him after a couple of weeks and named him jak :) -- the love of our lives -- I'm tearing up :( Interestingly enough, I quite-by-chance came across a friend of one of his PREVIOUS owners (STRANGE story) and found out his prior names. The original owners had named him Leroy, second owner named him Spud. jak was the perfect name.

Our next pup (after jak passed) was named Charlie by breeder, but we renamed him to tux. We wanted to keep it a 3-letter name to honor jak.

The third pup (adopted) was renamed Dash after the character in The Incredibles :) His original names were Oreo and Spot.

All of our dogs came with names. We had two greyhounds, Wizard and Big Shot. We also happened into a relationship with a "lost" dog who was old and doddering at the time she was found. But we thought she would be an easy return to her rightful home because she had a tag with her phone number and her name: Trixie. The phone number was disconnected and Trixie aged and is now disconnected too.
We have a Pomeranian now who was a service dog and she came with the name Sassy... which fits in a friendly cute kinda way; not a snippy kinda Sassy.
I think I have mentioned a family of cats I had. Sparkle and Sprinkle who had a litter of one which I naturally named Sprinkle.

  36. Dog: His name is Cash. My boyfriend and I got him when we were about 19 and had been listening to a lot of Johnny Cash. He's a black lab, so he's "the man in black". Kinda makes sense.

Cat: Capone. He is constantly in trouble for one thing or another. He's crafty, he's ornery, he's charming and he's mean.

A sidenote - I have the most ill-behaved animals in the world so I don't recommend naming your pets after alcoholic country singers and notorious mobsters. I think we brought it on ourselves.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  37. We too named our animals after singers.

Two cats - Merle Haggard and Sammy Davis

Now the dog we picked out of a hat, Nellie. With a husband coming from of St. Louis, all the relatives back there thought we named her after a St. Louis rapper.

    3 cats here:

Bebe - my 16 yo kitty (adopted) who came with the name and who was just put to sleep on New Years Eve - she was also called "Girly Girl' because she was very dainty, quiet and was sorta like a princess.

Fred - my other 16 yo kitty (also adopted), and also came with the name. He's goes by "Fredrick" (when not being good) and "The Man", "Buddy" and "Fred Said".

Zoe, pictured, also adopted, we named her just because we liked the name. She goes by "Belly", "Little Miss", and "Zoester the Toaster"

Cait - too funny about the gangster persona!!

I'm really impressed at the number of rescued and adopted animals here in W.S. - so good to hear. Wish we could rescue them all!

Most of my pet sitting clients have people names - Tommy, Timmy, Dave, Feona, Gracie, Lily, Dash, Frida, Ansel, Tucker, Brindel, Maygee, Suzie, Samantha, Obi, Oscar, Audrey, Chloe & Nitro (who could be in Cait's Capone gang:) I think it's interesting that over the last century the names for our pets and our treatment of them has become much more anthropomorphic. If you look back in the 20th century, names like Spot, Fido & Tiger seem to be much more common (although Tiger is still on the top 10 list).

Seems to me it's time that the laws caught up and started treating our pets as more than simple property. Penalties for abuse should be as bad as child abuse (since both groups suffer long term emotional and physical damage) and we should receive more than "market value" when they are hurt/killed by others.

Thanks again to all who are sharing - I'm loving the stories:)

Sugaroo (cereal in the 60's) - black cat (stray)
Yogi (after yogurt) (1970's) - Cocker Spaniel
Spodi Odi Codi (90's) - Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Pepper Ann Fann (our current pet) - Black Mini Schnauzer

Cricket (dog) because she was small and black and jumped around a lot--and as a puppy she had a shrill bark.

Daisy (cat)because she was brown and yellow and for some reason (probably because I was six) I thought she looked like one.

Maddie (cat)was short for Madeline because she was a hurricane orphan at about four weeks. She also had a lot of attitude and was constantly getting herself into situations. She responded to the call "Halloween Kitty!!!" by striking the scared cat pose and jumping out from around corners.

Millie (cat) a.k.a. Miss Millicent was such a properly behaved contrast to Maddie--and had facial markings that make it look like she was always looking down her nose.

Cassie (Cassandra)--a rescue cat who for the first six months we had her acted afraid of everything--including the kittens.

We have a sheltie that my younger sister named Scotland but we also call him Scottie.

Our oldest cat who is nine years old is named Oliver because he looks black, but is actually really dark brown, like an olive.

My cat who is about three or four is named Dusty Brown because he looks like a grey and white cat that someone threw into a pile of dust and because a band I like is called Dusty Brown.

There are two other cats living in our house, named Pete. Don't know why because they are owned by family friends.

We're getting a shitzu around mind February and my mother wants to call him Miloh, but I'm going to call him Galileo.

  46. I've only ever been around dogs. We had dogs growing up and my friends have always been dog oriented. It's sort of strange then that I've ended up taking care of a pair of siamese cats for the past several years.

Ilke, the girl cat, is the first cat I met and the only member of the household to have been born in West seattle. Ilke was named before we were introduced. She's a petite seal point at six lbs but generally the braver of the two. She enjoys left-shoulder riding and drinking water from the faucet. Ilke is intelligent, loving and faithful.

Orson, the boy cat, is a muscular 15 pound blue point with an interest in Adventure. At a very young age Orson became convinced that I was his mother, a misunderstanding that persists to this day. His namesakes are Orson Welles and Orson Scott Card. He has a great love of food and the outdoors, and having his belly rubbed by beautiful women.

    My cat: Winnie (Above)

I kinda had a thing for "The wonder years" when I got her, Winnie Cooper was my favorite character.

Fish (Deceased): Fishstick, because I thought it was funny.

    Before, lol!

He (or she) got so big I had to give him to a friend that had a little backyard pond. He lived another two years before he kicked the bucket.

Funny thing actually - all of the fish I've ever had have gotten so big I had to give them to pond owners.
