I am at 36th/Dakota, the neighborhood streets are icy and look slick. I have not been out to the main road yet. Where are you and how are the roads?

Highland Park, and hubby says the roads are, as a friend of mine puts it, slick as frozen snot.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I am at 40th and Genesee and the street looking up Genesee looks to icey.

Re: Highland Park
TR just twittered (10:50 AM) that Highland Park Way is about to be shut down. That's the road up off of W. Marginal coming up Boeing Hill, fyi.

My husband just called as he arrived at work in Kirkland. He said it was pretty nasty and slippery between Arbor Heights and the Junction and then clearer driving. He tried to pick up a co-worker on the way in... somewhere off of 35th, and said the street (a steep one) was too icy to drive on.

im at califoria and hanford. california seems okay..lots of cars. but only about 1 in 10 cars that attempt to head up hanford make it. the rest are sliding back down.

I wish there was a good way for the forum and home-page comments to interlace at times like this but at the moment there isn't so I just want to say that if anybody has any specifics like "road X is closed" please also shoot me a note editor@westseattleblog.com when you get a chance - i am checking here as i can but am also typing/photo processing really fast so may miss something. people are refreshing the home page post to get the latest info so everything helps! thanks again to everybody.

BF just drove from here (36th/Dakota) to Barton down 35th. Said it is solid ice, everyone is driving like idiots.

Lincoln Park Way between Fauntleroy and Beach Dr. is a steep street that seems to drain a lot of local traffic. We've been entertaining ourselves all morning watching cars trying to make it up...the...hill...and failing. At least half the cars that started to go up turned around and went back down to Beach Dr.
However it was 53 degrees on Wednesday and this ground is warm. Snow/ice in the street now gone although the sidewalks are iced and very slippery.
That was some really bad wet snow. WET snow. Then after it snowed and that water laden snow hit the warm ground and started to melt, the surface air temperature dropped and turned it into an ice slick.
Anyway....I would advise drivers to avoid Lincoln Park Way in snowy weather. It was a mess out there this morning.

crosspost with airport thread:
My husband just did a recon drive around Arbor Heights, especially 106th. (He was scouting alternate routes to the airport from our house.) He said most of Arbor Heights is compacted snow now turned into ice. Very slick, very dangerous.Posted 3 years ago # -
Well, I am now officially missing two events, because I don't feel like getting in the car and driving to Lake Union and Greenlake. It's cold and slippery out there!
Posted 3 years ago # -
I saw Engine 29 go by, with chains on both sets of tires, here on 45th off Admiral. And all the cars driving by now are fish tailing. What wore off today with traffic or melted is now refreezing.

Just took dog for a walk in High Point. If she wasn't pulling me along I'd have been slipping and sliding all over the place. Looks like we'll be working from home tomorrow if the temps don't rise. I just don't risk it anymore....

I just walked up to the Thriftway.
Everything is a sheet of ice. Side streets were unwalkable much less driveable.
Two sand trucks just came through. Everything not sanded is an ice slick. Period.
The pretty snow turned to ice in a hurry.

36th and Andover: bring sticks and skates. game begins when the streetlights go on. no checking and keep the puck on the ice.

I'm thinking I should change my avatar to something more seasonal. Trenton is quite the ice slide. The hill up from the post office at Westwood is particularly entertaining. In fact the KOMO news truck has been parked with cameras poised for almost two hours. Looks to me like there have been plenty-o stupid driving deeds upon the hill but not newsworthy enough I guess. Does someone want to be on the news?

flowerpetal: you must live right by us. I've been watching the trenton hill out my window most of the day. VERY entertaining. And a little scary once kids started sledding this afternoon. PM me if you want to see if we're neighbors.

Any side streets right now are just sheets of ice. Fauntleroy and California are clear for the most part. There is a wicked ice rink in front of OK Corral BBQ - the storm drain must have been backed up. Last night we saw the giant puddle and knew that was going to be trouble. So if you're coming off the WS Bridge, stay out of the right most lane at the intersection of Fauntleroy and Avalon.

I was lucky enough to be able to avoid driving today by working from home. Sadly, I really need to go into the office tomorrow but I'm terrified of black ice with the temps staying so low.
Anyone go down Roxbury/Olsen Place hill (to 509) today that could report on the conditions?
The side roads near White Center still seem pretty much iced over.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Bayou -- I'm in the same boat you are. Have to go in to SODO tomorrow (worked from home today) -- trying to decide whether Roxbury to 509 to 1st is smarter, or heading up Delridge to the bridge is the way to go from South Delridge/Highland Park.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I'm doing the bridge, Aim. I'm hoping that SODO isn't too icy. It will be the getting to Delridge that will likely do me in. *sigh*

I need to take my folks to the airport tomorrow at 5:00 am...any suggestions?

Does anyone know if Sound Transit Route #560 is running tomorrow to Seatac? How do I find out about bus schedule snow changes??
Posted 3 years ago # -
I'm also taking people to the airport at 5 tomorrow. But we drove down to the southend today, and as soon as we got off our neighborhood side streets everything was fine -- clear and dry.
Posted 3 years ago # -
The 560 was running today. I saw it go by several times.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Aim, those are basically my only two options as well.
Mayjune, could you clarify where you drove today in the southend that was clear? Thanks!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Drove my parents up to the RiteAid parking lot and waited 5 minutes for the 560. Mom says the bus is nice and warm and she's happy to not be in my car worrying about black ice. Dad says the bus doesn't feel like it has chains on (it doesn't, I checked), but it's handling the road without slipping. I felt guilty at first suggesting to "put them on the bus", but now I know I made the right choice. Sound Transit came through!!

We drove down to downtown Kent and the IKEA/Southcenter areas. I-5 seems totally fine (to me) too. I also drove down to the airport this morning without any problems. Had I not left my house in the last two days, I think I would feel like the situation is way worse than it actually is -- our residential streets are really icy, and there's still lots of snow around. But as soon as I get on 35th or Fauntleroy I've had no problems driving, and the streets are pretty dry. And the places I've been outside of WS seem like they didn't get nearly as much of a storm.

We are in the Admiral District of West Seattle. With more snow forecast, we are wondering if anyone knows a way into Pigeon Point that would be the best to go if things get icy again. We need to get to the end (almost above the viaduct) each day. We have to consider we may not be able to get down Admiral either way. We thought we might have to take California Ave & turn at Thriftway and go down HomeDepo road or something. Any ideas are most appreciated.

i haven't checked the forecast. how soon is more snow expected? i have to go to the airport tonight... my baby girl will be there:)))
she is hovering in spirit over my shoulder insisting that i point out that she passed the baby stage decades ago... ;~>
Posted 3 years ago # -
JoB, last I heard, snow coming after midnight, so you should be okay on that front. They're always our babies ;)

We're at 42nd and Andover, and our street finally thawed out in today's sunshine, with only a few patches of ice left. But it was a massive ice rink, and even this morning I watched a delivery truck slip and slide down the steep incline of Andover (between 41st & 42nd) before turning left onto 42nd.
Westwood Village Target had only a few snow shovels left when I was there at noon today.

Been posting this in the home page thread but I just took a tour of major WS/WC roads, from the WC business district north to Seacrest, and the majors are all in good shape, plus some formerly dicey ones like Morgan hill between 35th and Thriftway, BUT after dark will be a different matter - lots of wet roads that will refreeze.

Does anyone know what the parking lots in the junction are looking like? I'm meeting a friend at West 5 in half an hour and I don't want to be too surprised :(
