House Rental Advice Needed ASAP

Hi Everybody...We just got a call from our landlord today...he must sell the house we are currently renting due to his dire financial situation. We are a family of 5 which includes 3 kids at Alki. We also have a few pets...they are a cat, a hamster and 2 fish. Technically our lease expires March 31st but we've been advised that we should vacate sooner rather than later. Obviously these are less than ideal circumstances and that is why we are reaching out to the WSB community. If anybody knows of any rentals available now or Jan 1st that would be wonderful.

A very cute house in our neighborhood is going up for rent - haven't seen the landlord yet since the tenant left a couple of weeks ago, but I know he wants to rent it again - I think $1200/month and he doesn't mind pets. Great neighborhood with lots of kids. If you're interested in seeing the outside I'll send you the address. We're looking for good neighbors!

Oh Mellaw6565...thank you so much! I would love the address so we can see the outside...thrilled to hear there are lots of kids! We don't have any kids in the neighborhood we are at right now! Do you know how many bedrooms? We need a min of 3.

Sure- we currently pay $1800 plus all utilities...we would consider anything below:) and maybe a little higher...

  6. There is a house on our block going up for rent as well (maybe the same block?) I am not sure the size, tho, it might only be 2 bedroom - but a great neighborhood in Admiral - no sign up yet.
Might be best if you provide and email if you are interested and I can let you know the address (for safety sake)

  9. Sorry to hear that you need to move, JJetson. I saw a sign down the block from me that a house is for rent - it's on Fauntleroy just south of Hudson (2 blocks south of Alaska) on the west side of Fauntleroy. I don't know anything about the house, but just happened to see the For Rent sign.

Thank you Hammerhead! $2000 seems a little too high right now...given everything that is going on...but I will PM you if nothing pans out. Thanks to you too Sue! In our panic we started driving around...even drove down Fauntleroy but it was dark and must have missed the sign:(! Will check it out and make the call!

JJetson, if you pass on the 1200 two bedroom, let me know the address because that's exactly what we're looking for.

Emortenson, although the $1200 is very appealing...if in fact it is a 2 bedroom it will be a very tight fit ;) I haven't heard back but as soon as I get the particulars if it doesn't work for us I will def pass it on!

  14. my only advice is to steer clear of any properties leased through prestige rental mgmt.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  15. And I would add to k's post to say to avoid Allied Group (West Ridge Park, specifically).

I don't know the name of the neighborhood, but if you go to the intersection of Genesee and California and go West, then follow the arterial north, there have been a number of For Rent signs around for a while now. It's a nice neighborhood with a good mix of house styles and sizes. Sorry I can't be more specific, but it seems like an area with lots of opportunity!

I appreciate the great tips Emortenson & Velvet Bulldog...please keep 'em coming! K & Sue thanks for the heads up...I will steer clear of any dealings with the companies you mentioned...more stress is not the goal right now!

  18. ya know, I love this forum, and this community.I don't know of any houses for rent, but I'm thrilled that so many out here respond so quickly. So sorry you have to move right around the holiday, but hope you find something quickly.

I'd also go over that lease with a fine tooth comb...and see what he's willing to give for you to back out of a signed lease. It's a legal agreement, not just a piece of paper.:)

I understand what you're saying JanS:) We will do the research to determine what our rights are. The way I figure it...we have a family...he has a family...
I really want to try to lessen the impact of this on my kids. Going thru a short sale/foreclosure as a renter feels like double jeopardy. Trying to take control of the situation and lessening the impact for all feels much better!
Having the forum to reach out to is a gift! We love WS!

JJ, if it hasn't already been mentioned, the tab at the top of the blog labeled *MORE* has a continuous, updated west seattle craiglist feed. There are always rentals in the mix and it can be easier to scan than the entire craigslist site.

This really is an amazing community -- I'm wondering, JJ, if you can't negotiate staying a bit longer without any negative impact to your landlord. That is, if you need -- even if it's a short or forclosure sale, they're not going to sell the house immediately...all of the various bailouts haven't trickled to main street (or alki avenue) and they might like to have the income and to be able to sell an occupied house.

Haven't done this myself, but I've heard of people stopping at "For Sale By Owner -- price reduced" places and asking if they'd be interested in renting and wound up with a great deal on a house. :-)

  29. don't count on housing maps to show you everything on Craigslist in West Seattle. they were down for a while at least a couple of times this last year and they don't seem to have as many postings.

The $1200 house I told you about is a 2 bedroom, so it probably won't work for you. If anyone wants the address for the house to take a look-see, please PM me:)

There is a large white house on 47th Ave SW between Edmunds and Hudson that had a for rent sign up a few days ago. Bonus it that it is only 2 blocks down from Ercolini park. We live just north of Edmunds and there are a lot of kids in the area (including mine).

My son goes to Alki as well and I know that there is a school bus stop at 45th & Edmunds.

In the same area on 48th there is a smaller house for rent for $1,250, I think. Just saw the sign while walking the dog on Sunday.

OMG...thanks so much everybody! We spent the entire day driving around WS & checking out houses. We have a couple of possibilities and are hopeful. Charlabob...we have had several conversations with our landlord at this point...but the best we can determine is that he is 3mil in the hole and trying to somehow secure our current home for his family. Can't say that I blame him but he is a tornado waiting to come barrelling down on us and we just want to get out of the way! All the suggestions have been wonderful. JanS appreciate the direct link to Craigslist. As soon as we sign a new lease I will let everybody know but until then all suggestions feel like hands reaching out to us...and we know it will all work out somehow/someway! Sorry to be so corny but it is the truth:)

Just saw 2 more homes for rent (although not sure about price or size - just noticed signs).

One is on 35th Ave. and Hinds, the other on 36th Ave. and hinds.

    Good luck.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  34. I saw the sign today fro the one on 36th...they didn't have a price posted, but there is a number on the sign in front of the house. It's a NICE house...good sized, too..I think maybe both signs were for the same place, as they were all down the arterial, with the address on them...

  36. if it doesn't work.. there was a house for rent sign at the corner of 35th and thistle yesterday.. 3 bd for around 1500.. short term memory fails me right now:)

it's a great neighborhood... we moved into it not that long ago and i love it.

I am wishing the best for you and your family.

let us know if there is anything else we can do to help you..

  37. Don't know if you are still looking but there's a 2bd/2ba for rent on 39th just a few doors south of Morgan. There is a large fenced yard and a nice view. This location is just a few blocks up the hill from the Morgan Junction so it's a good location. The sign didn't have a price. Hope things are working out for you!

    Posted 3 years ago #
  38. There's a sign up also at 5009 Fauntleroy (just south of Hudson) that says it's a 3 bedroom - no price listed.
