HMC RichParticipantHere is a post that shows that once in awhile, good ideas can be brought up and all sides can agree (mostly) and take positive action. http://dailysignal.com/2015/03/13/bill-ban-congress-using-taxpayer-funds-first-class-travel/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=thf03142015FirstClassTravel
Glad to see the newer representatives taking action to help the people and not the Patrician class who change once we vote them into office. Kudos to Democrat Rep Gwen Graham.

JanSParticipantthey need to pay for their own tickets, doncha think? I suppose if it’s truly official business we’ll give ’em a break :) First class? Should only be in their dreams…

SmittyParticipantI get it, but sometimes worry that our “best and brightest” will shy away from public service if we take away perks. Let’s face it – they don’t get paid *that* well….
We certainly don’t want our congress being run by only the rich and/or famous.
March 15, 2015 at 5:03 pm #822841
JoBParticipantbeing “poorly” paid doesn’t seem to have negatively affected their net worth..

JanSParticipantpoorly paid…let’s see…how many days do they work? At top, 159…on average, 137(fewer than 3 days a week). How much is the starting salary? Base starting is $174,000. Plus perks…great health insurance, first class flights, free food, free rounds of golf. Vacation days? in 2013, they had 239 ( http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/12/02/3009951/congress-vacation/ )
Yes, they have to maintain 2 households. But , really? I maintain one on less than $20,000 a year….give me a break…they can fly coach !

SmittyParticipantJoB, that’s my point exactly.
Only the wealthy will govern because they can afford too.
Let’s get more “Joe 6-packs” in there. Taking away perks will only serve to attract those that don’t need them.
March 15, 2015 at 11:17 pm #822844
JoBParticipantSmitty..
let’s not kid ourselves…
only the extremely wealthy
or those totally beholding to the extremely wealthy are in there now..
let the wealthy pony up for their perks
we are already paying for their political theater
March 15, 2015 at 11:39 pm #822845
JanSParticipantJoe 6-pack can’t afford to run, unless he has financial backers, either you and me, or the big backers…like Koch. While I would feel that he is beholden to me because I am a constituent, the big backer wants more than that. The big backer isn’t doing it out of the goodness of his heart. And therein lies the dilemma…doesn’t matter what the perks are or not. When they are elected, you and I pay for their plane flights. I would like them to be paid for coach, and then they can upgrade on their own dollar. After all, whatever way they fly, it’s free, and that is a perk unto itself.

HMC RichParticipantI like people to have the opportunity to make a lot of money. But, I have always found in my business (sports) that Millionaires or the top 2% always want perks and free stuff. Years ago I was working a Sunday Night Nitro game. Harold Reynolds (Mariners/ESPN) was there and saw the shirt I had just been given by TNT and said how much he liked it. So, I gave it to him. Why? I have no idea other than I knew he also supported a Charity that I knew of. Athletes love Steak House coupons too!! Politicians are as bad or worse.
