Home for a chocolate lab

My friend is suddenly unable to care for her chocolate lab. We are looking for a good home for her soon. We want to avoid giving her to a shelter where, as an older dog, she probably won't be adopted. Does someone you know have room in their heart and home for a loving chocolate lab?

If you need to put her in a shelter, give her to the Humane Society in Bellevue, I have seen MANY older dogs get adopted there!

Thanks for the tip Lisa! Every little bit of information is helpful. I'm relaying this all responses to her as she's temporarily without internet. I just knew that all the pet lovers here would have some good ideas to put Gallie into a good home.

Charlabob I will check and get back to you. Again, thanks so much for your responses. :) If anyone else has tips for finding a home for an older dog, it's so so appreciated.

Here's a craiglist listing for Gallie, with a picture. It says she's 8 years old, happy, loves to sleep, very loyal, and loves to play fetch.

She hasn't been around a ton of kids or other animals. When she is, she's timid.

Hey Lindsey, has the dog gotten a new home yet? If not try contacting King 5 TV since they do have those segments on pets needing homes. I wish I could take her but I have 2 very spoiled cats and a child. Good luck!

No, no home yet, but I appreciate the tips! I've also listed this on facebook, so hopefully Gallie will have a new home soon.

Ugh! I already have 3 dogs, otherwise I would take her if I could! I did send this out to a bunch of my dog loving friends though, so hopefully someone will chime in soon that can take her. I'll post here whatever I hear back.

I am with HunterG on this one. She is older and thyroid problems. I am sure a quick walk around the block with the family she has been with would be fine. Sounds like a quick out to me. very sad

I think she has already been adopted, but out of curiousity is it normal to charge a rehoming fee for a dog or cat that was your pet? We are SLOWLY starting to look for a pet for our family.

The craigslist.org posting has been deleted, has she been adopted?

I believe there are two schools of thought with regard to the rehoming fee. One is that the inclusion of a rehoming fee will steer away people looking to adopt the animal and then turn around and sell it to a lab, leaving truly interested parties with a pet they plan to bring into their family. The other is that some (dishonest) owners are looking to make a quick buck.

Can't remember if it's specifically against their rules, but I think "free" pet listings on Craigslist get flagged & removed pretty quickly too, so rehoming fee guards against that.

No that is NOT true. There are free kittens ALL over craig's list adds. I even call these people to offer FREE spay and neuter and no one takes me up on the offer.

That makes me feel a bit better about it if it is to keep someone from taking them to a lab. I just thought it seemed strange to have someone pay to take an old and sick dog off your hands when it seems like they are doing the favor.

My understanding is that the pet listings that get deleted from Craigs list are the ones where it appears the owner is in business and trying to make money by selling animals. A red flag is if the rehoming fee is too high. I think the rehoming fee is supposed to be nominal.

Hey thanks for all the replies. The craigslist ad was taken down because the owner was told to do so by the PAWS organization she's been in contact with. I don't know exactly what the rehoming fee was about - something about preventing people from taking the dog and selling it to a lab. After the owner found out about those risks, she took the craigslist ad down.

The dog has not been adopted yet. Yes she's older, she has a thyroid problem, but she's still a pretty sweet dog and I think there must be a good home for her out there somewhere. I'm not here to comment on the apartment or choices of the owner, I'm just here to advocate for a nice dog that needs a good home. I believe the dog would be FREE to a good home. The email above is still the best way to contact the owner. So far she hasn't gotten any emails regarding Gallie.

You are a good friend for lending a helping hand and I commend your efforts. I will ask around at work.

I think it should be communicated to your friend how irresponsible it is to leave her dog high and dry like that. Companion animals depend on us for their lives, and sometimes it is rather unfortunate that they have to; humans can sometimes be rather flaky.

I also think your friend probably could have kept her dog if she really made it a priority. I would live on the street before I would give up my dogs.

That said, if she absolutely "can't" keep the dog, I would take her to the Seattle Humane Society (in Bellevue). They are a no kill shelter. Rehoming an animal yourself is usually a bad idea. Statistically dogs who are rehomed once are likely to be rehomed again. She has no way of ensuring this poor dog won't be bounced around from home to home for the rest of her life. Shelters are professionals and are much better at screening potential adopters to ensure that the match is a permanent one. I wish the best for this poor dog.

Thanks for all your kind replies. I wanted to let any interested parties know that Gallie was given to the Bellevue Human Society. She's not currently listed on the petfinder.com boards, and I don't know anything else. This thread can be closed. :(
