Hi all, would the forum members like to meet for a get together before the Christmas Holiday's. I am thinking of a dessert social maybe at someone's home or maybe at a local hang out. I make a mean pumpkin cheesecake.

I would love to do that.

There are MANY forum members I have not had the pleasure of meeting. Dessert would be fun, but I don't bake. Would it be ok to bring a yummy dessert someone else made? I don't wanna' get busted by all the awesome WSB Forum Foodies? ;)

Yeah, I'm down. I make these really good sandwich cookies called Oero's. Then Nabisco came along and stole my idea and tried to cover it up by just reversing the name.

Lol, Knight you kill me.

I think it's a great idea...so...who has a really big house?
Or..does beer go with desserts? There's alwasy BPP...I bet they'd allow it...
ideas, anyone?
Posted 3 years ago # -
how about upstairs at Big Al's Brewery? That's a great space. We could do a potluck type of thing. They do allow private parties up there.
Posted 3 years ago # -
that would be fun...
Posted 3 years ago # -
I'd be totally into that, and I second the recommendation for Big Al's!! The upstairs space is really great and worked well for a potluck on election night. And I'm not just saying that because it's stumbling distance from my house. :)
Posted 3 years ago # -
where is big Al's? Store bought desserts would be welcomed. Just showing up and having a good time in the only requirement.
Posted 3 years ago # -
RS, we can walk home together then. I think Big Al's is eight blocks from my house.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Cookies, anyone?
Posted 3 years ago # -
hahahaha...you do make the best cookies :)
Posted 3 years ago # -
celeste17,
Big Al's is in White Center, on 14th and 100th, at or near the northeast corner.

i am in for this one...
and to save everyone food poisoning.. i will shop for my dessert:)

Hi all, we discussed this get together at the book club tonight and a great idea was brought forth. Please bring a donation to the local food bank or a gift card that socialworker can use for his clients. Also instead of just dessert we can make it a potluck and people can bring whatever they would like to bring.
Does anyone know if we can reserve the banquet area of Big Al's?
The date of December 14th around 3pm was suggested.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I think that's a great idea...and I've already put the 14th at 3pm on my calendar :)
Some beer and a late afternoon nosh...nice..and helping out people to boot..what more can you ask for :)

Jan you rock!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Sounds like fun!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Celeste17, I think you would just have to call Big Al's ahead of time and request the upstairs for a private party.
I love the idea of turning this into a food drive, too. Maybe diapers for West Side Baby as well?
Posted 3 years ago # -
I like the diaper idea as well...
Posted 3 years ago # -
Diapers, food and gift cards.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I'll keep an eye on this thread but somebody please flag me when you have the time/place finalized, and with the fundraiser angle, we'll plug it on the home page too, if you don't mind. That's a Sunday, right? We might even be meetingless and able to drop by, for pix at least. That's also sort of the WSB third anniversary (first post was 12/24/05 but we're also making anniversary fodder out of other dates in December such as "going public").
Posted 3 years ago # -
Big Al's already has a big barrel set up for Food Bank donations. IT is a perfect spot.
Posted 3 years ago # -
who is contacting big al's?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Big Al's will be closed on the 14th. They would be avail on the 13th which is a Saturday. Jerome just told me that their winter hours will include being closed on Sundays.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Scratch that. They just called back and said they are going to open that day. The upstairs is all ours.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Thanks FullTilt! You rock!
and yay for Big Al's, which is rapidly becoming my favorite new joint!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Thank You Full Tilt.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Ok, this is the plan for the Holiday Get together. Place: Big Al's Brewery 14th and 100th in White Center on December 14th at 3:00 pm
Please bring a dish to share and a donation item for the Food Bank or Diapers or a Gift Card. Please let me know if you have any questions.Posted 3 years ago # -
Thank you, celeste, for making this happen!
Posted 3 years ago # -
yeah! way to go celeste! I am looking forward to it!!
now, what to bring....I do make a mean rum cake....and by mean - I mean you shouldn't drive afterwards. ;)
Posted 3 years ago # -
Poo! Another meet-up I'm going to miss :( I won four tickets to a Northwest Chamber Chorus performance, and wouldn't you know, it's on the afternoon of the 14th. I'm never going to meet any WSB'rs!! And I was REALLY looking forward to tasty holiday fare. . .
Posted 3 years ago # -
Sorry Peaches, next get together you plan it and we will be there.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Thanks for liaising with Big Al's, Full Tilt! And Jen, I say bring on the rum cake!! :)
Posted 3 years ago # -
Ah HA!
I'm calling dibbs on bringing decorated cupcakes.
And NO. I'm not sayin' which ones from where.Posted 3 years ago # -
How does mocha almond raspberry torte sound? My holiday specialty...
Posted 3 years ago # -
Peaches....we're much more fun than chamber music...give the tickets to someone and come party with us :)
Posted 3 years ago # -
JanS. . I have NO doubt that the fun at Big Al's will be VERY different from the fun at the concert. Tempting to bail on the concert, but I've already arranged a girls holiday fest with friends--lunch at some nice downtown eatery, a stroll through the FAO Schwartz display at Macy's, the concert, then coffee and dessert. But I will be thinking of you all and will drop food donations by Big Al's so I'm at least there in spirit.
Celeste--I'll take on next year's holiday meet-up. How about a cookie swap (everyone brings a bunch of cookies, swaps around, and all go home with a great variety of holiday treats). Great to do right before you have a party--your guests will be impressed with how hard you worked to 'bake' all those different cookies!Posted 3 years ago # -
Peaches we use to do a cookie swap every Christmas with two other families. Mom would bake for weeks before the swap. One year she made the mistake of putting the cookie container upstairs. There are four of us kids and we found that container and would just eat a couple of cookies. Mom went upstairs to get the cookies and there were just a few left. Needless to say it was all hands on deck to replace those cookies. We were laughing about this memory just the other day. Great Memories.

soclwrkrinmotn says he does have families who are in dire need this season, and the department has very limited resources due to budget cuts, so they definitely need help from the community.
Gift cards are the most useful items and are greatly appreciated, because every family has different needs. Also needed are things that may be useful for homeless kids trying to get through college, like grocery store cards and general things that teenagers need/want (Apple store, bookstore, etc)
Posted 3 years ago # -
soclwrkrinmotn, aka "socket wrench" says he will wear a santa claus hat if people will give donations for his clients.
Posted 3 years ago # -
ps.. he will also bring a stack of tax-deduction forms for those who want to donate and take the writeoff.
Posted 3 years ago # -
It will be nice to have a Santa at the get together. Can we sit on his lap and tell him our wishes for Christmas? ;)
Posted 3 years ago # -
Hi all, I have talked with Aim and Social worker and they say that if you are interested in obtaining a gift card that they could use grocery stores or target gift cards. Looking forward to seeing people at the get together.
Posted 3 years ago # -
soclwrkrinmotn..
you will be wearing that hat.. i have already collected a couple of gift cards:)
I have decided to pay it forward by picking up a gift card every time i shop until the 14th...
some will be small.. but if i do them a little at a time i won't feel the crunch so much..
what a great excuse to shop:)
It might inspire people if you did a short sketch of some of your clients who could use a little help this christmas...
and what kind of help they could use most...
and told us which agency you work for:)
As for food.. i think i will look for something salty to go with all of that sweet.

For safety and confidentiality reasons, soclwrkrinmotn cannot say who he is/who he works for/identify his families on the blog. He'd be fired if he did, and rightly so.
However, he can give a general sketch of the needs of the families. (Too much detail is unfair, as many of them live in our community)
You can also check out a blog that is dedicated to the homeless youth of Seattle, as the kids profiled on this blog are good representations of some of those he serves.

Also check out SEA, as he is newly on the Board there. Seattle Education Access provides higher education advocacy and opportunity to people struggling to overcome poverty and adversity. http://www.seattleeducationaccess.org

Posted 3 years ago # -
cudos for the board position...
i'll keep shopping:)

Jan and Jo - you are both right - he's pretty darned amazing. I'm lucky to be counted among his friends, much less to be married to him. He's really an example for all of us. :-)
