Hoarding Food and Water in West Seattle: Best Practices?

I've been watching all the 2012 videos on youtube and my in-laws are LDS.

Needless to say I am looking to the West Seattle community for suggestions surrounding best practices and/or methodologies for long term food and water storage.

    Here are my objectives:

    - Feed a family of 6 (4 humanoid, 1 dog, 1 cat) for up to 30 days

    - Enough potable water for 30 days

Are there any hoarding clubs in the area or groups of people that hoard useful stuff for fun?

No weapons, therefore no need for bulletry.

I don't have a hoard yet that I'm aware of.

Why am I suddenly craving cupcakes?

Hi Jiggers - I'm not sure that's the best thing to help you survive in times of extreme natural or financial disaster. Also, that stuff is so ubiquitous now it has totally lost it's appeal for many folks except those who deny they ever look at it.

    Luigilinguini,

While I have no LDS family member I do have LDS friends.

The hoarding process for them seems to be an iterative one. Think K in Kafka's Trial, and have fun with picking up canned chilli at random intervals in anticipation of some unforseen crisis.

I've picked up a survival pack for each car as well as a four day emergency kit for a family of four. Add to that extra food, water and blankets that we keep in storage bins in the garage. I need to increase our supply of pet supplies still.

  10. thanks for reminding me to put the basics of a kit back into my car...

i sometimes forget that an emergency might not find me at home:)

besides, if you are home the kit in the car gives you extra supplies that could really come in handy.

Irukandji - Best feedback and info yet. Thank you!

Remember what happened during the wind storm a couple years ago!

  12. I got a great deal on Mac N Cheese last week. 3 for a $1! I am technically hoarding. There is this guy down the road that keeps a lot of stuff in his garage. He isn't LDS and he claims that he isn't hoarding, but he sure has pack-rat mentality. I'm sure he would hold some of your flour for you. Warning: mice love flour.

Adam - I like the way you think; "how can I do this the best way possible and avoid infestation".

    Moisture is also the enemy.

To clarify my comment about LDS folks above...you'll never find a more prepared or organized group of people. If anything ever "went down", they're going to be just fine.

I'm banking on last minute conversion in my survival plan.

  14. finding metal storage bins that don't break the bank is difficult.

i have been looking for them for dogfood... and find even those designed for the purpose are nothing more than metal trash cans with plastic liners.

that would be cool.. but unless the metal meets the floor exactly, mice can chew their way in from the bottom...

and it is difficult to keep the oils from the dog food out of the plastic.. metals just keeps a 40 pound sack fresh long enough for a 30 lb dog to eat it...

    any suggestions?

Hi feefeelarue - These are paranoid end of the world videos that deal with the end of the Mayan calendar and the subsequent total destruction of Earth as we know it. The end of days will be 12/21/2012 according to these people.

Not very pleasant at all, but I enjoy the rush of considering such extreme scenarios. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean people aren't watching you.

I'm looking at this from the "length of mortgage" perspective as well. If this stuff is true, my 30 year mortgage will end up being a 5 year mortgage!

  18. Well aside from the Apocalypse, a good vacuum food saver is critical (well, like the FoodSaver). This lets you vacuum the air from things you place in polyethylene and seal them away from the atmosphere. Since I've received one I have discovered the joys of hoarding food, and cooking ahead. It makes it easier to smoke a whole side of a salmon, and eat it all winter, for instance. Natch, you also need a nearly empty freezer. There is easily two weeks of meals in my freezer prepared by me and it is bulging at the seams.

Now I am anything but a 2012 believer, or a Mormon being a secular humanist, but it does make me feel better to have such a reserve. You can also vacuum and seal dry goods like beans and flour and other easily prepared foodstuffs (if you really are paranoid, you've already secured a water and fuel supply).

Good luck, your posts are entertaining, not to mention your avatars.

Thanks for the info JayDee. Being the lone conspiracy theorist here on the blogforum gets me a lot of strange looks and responses like the one from Vincent and his minion CM. But you waltzed right up to the compound like a good neighbor. I like you for that.

I like the vacuum sealed package idea, I just haven't found one I really like yet. I'd like to find a manufacturer that has more universal offerings than most of these basic consumer oriented solutions I've run across as they all seem to have the typical trappings of "you have to buy this, this, and this from us and you can't get them anywhere else and there are no aftermarket solutions or support". In my mind, the "Champion Juicer" of vacuum packaging would be ideal; solid, simple, and you can run anything (within reason) through it and it'll work.

The 2012 thing is fun and exciting. To think the End of Days is right around the corner is rather invigorating despite the fact that I really understand this is yet another Illuminati ploy wherein they slather disinformation in order to distract people from what's going on around the world, actually.

I'm not so great with participles so pardon me if that last paragraph left anything dangling.

I'll hang with Mormons as opposed to folks from other sects on most days. I like the Masonic secrecy, the notion of rituals, and the fact that the rank and file don't evangelize - they leave that to the Missionaries. LDS Missionaries are arguably the most well-versed in terms of defending their faith compared to other sects of Christianity, and those little uniforms make them very presentable and non-threatening. They receive extensive training at the MTC at BYU in UT.

There are numerous outdoor recreational opportunities in Utah as well.

  21. I'm still trying to recover from Y2K. And Snowpocalypse.

I do like Utah. The Bonneville Salt Flats make me think of bacon.

sw - First, let me start by saying that the following transmission is based on fact but is distorted slightly for your (potential) amusement. I don't want you to do anything with this information other than to cherish it and keep it close to you at all times. Remember: veracity is tantamount.

I like bacon, therefore I like bacon salt.

Is that what you're referring to? Luna Park has bacon salt on every table.

  23. Grocery outlet in Burien had a package of uncured bacon at reasonable prices two days ago. i haven't opened it yet, but the andoile sausage from the same company was incredible.

    vacuum sealed for freshness;)

  24. See - there you go. Now my stomach is growling. Oh bacon salt - why doest thou tempt me?

I really should keep my tinfoil hat on at all times.

Mmmmmmm. Bacon. And salt. There you go, Luigi! SW has unintentionally provided you with the perfect solution! Who needs vacuum packed whateva when you have salt and a basement. And off leash dogs and cats! It's the perfect solution to all of our problems, if only we could figure out a way to work in reckless drivers....Anyway, kill, salt and hang those nuisance strays and, voila, you have food that'll keep for ages AND you take care of those dastardly garden and yard poopers!
