hire the homeless

  1. This week i hired 4 people from Nickelsville for two different tasks...
i needed help getting my yard ready for summer
and i needed someone to come in and spring clean my floors...

i stopped at the Security tent, told the guy on duty that i wanted to hire some people and asked who they recommended.
within minutes i had the help i needed.

I chose to stop by the camp to talk with security about who would be good for my particular jobs, but you could call them at 206-450-5268.

I chose to schedule the day ahead of my need but i could as easily have gathered a crew of people who need the money and want to work on the spot.

I chose to pick the up and deliver them back to the camp and i chose to feed them lunch..
but neither of those is a requirement for getting workers.

got work of your own that could use a couple of extra hands?

you might want to consider Nickelsville...
someone there does pretty much any job you can imagine.. and does it well.

I am going to use them again.

  2. Here is my story: I have been able to hire 3 new people for my cleaning business. I have to say I had to get over my judgements of homeless people as, my experience with them in the animal world as not been so great Well I went there and gave them my card. I got 4 phone calls with in an hour.

Since I have hired these people I have picked up more work. It is has been hell trying to find people who want to work and they do. I know putting this out there my clients and even potential clients may worry. Again I am doing my best not to judge so I ask that you don't either. I have had so much positive feed back from the blog about my cleaning business that I could not be more blessed.

I am PROUD and HONORED that I am able to help some one get back on their feet. Especially if they want to get back on their feet.

I hire them for yard work too. Did a great job.

  3. JoB & Pamela-
How much did you pay for yardwork? I need help but have a very limited income. I want to pay a fair wage but not certain what that would be or if I could even afford it.

  4. Thanks JoB and hammerhead.

The folks that I heard talking about working for each of you spoke with a great deal of pride in the work that they did, and were very thankful for the opportunity to earn some money.

whoops I didn't mean you Pamela, that's your business and it's private info. Feel free to erase your post if you want.

I meant individuals like JoB who hire for random projects.

I would guess between 10 - $20 an hour, depending on the jobs. Tell the security guy (who answers the phone) what you need done and he can tell you if someone is available who knows that particular area. These are NOT unskilled unemployables; that's why we keep saying, "There but for the grace of the goddess ... "

I met some of the folks who have been helping JoB and they're coming to the cb's to help with organizing and hauling away junk.

Happy to hear JoB and HH both had positive experiences.

Another thing (this mattered to me): the person you hire gets to keep the money they earn. If they choose to toss something into the camp's kitty, they can -- but there's not any "off the top" fee for the placement.

    You call Security number
Security helps you select the right person for your job
You pick 'em up and take 'em back
    ...

  9. i won't disclose what i paid the people who helped me..

    but for comparison purposes...
i think the Millionaires Club guys
and maybe Casa Latina get $10 an hour
I know you can get guys outside home depot for that .. and maybe less.

if you book with the day labor place in White Center you pay $20 and the company keeps at least half.. but they are supposedly licensed and bonded.

    I provided transportation..
but it is possible you don't need to pick them up.
there is a bus stop right outside the camp.

I also provided lunch for the 3 who worked outside over the lunch hour ..
    and water...
i'd have fed the guy who worked inside but he didn't want to stop to eat.

Thanks, my intention was really just to make sure I paid a fair wage. I know what to do now.

  11. You're welcome...

I would recommend paying on the low side of your range and bonusing for great work.

    everyone loves a bonus..
especially when they know they earned it.

    one other thing...

none of the guys i hired ever talked to me about wages...

    i brought the subject up
and told them about how long i thought the job would take that day
and what i could afford to pay them...

i recommend doing that up front...
that and when you will pay them.
    it makes everyone more comfortable.

oh.. and cash is easier for them.
some have bank accounts but i suspect many don't.

I have met those working with hammerhead and agree with charlabob's statement - "There but for the grace..."

Please consider giving a resident an opportunity. And of course, think about joining in on the potluck!
