Hiawatha Field NO DOGS!

  1. Can you not read the signs or understand the circle/slash?

Do you read them but think they aren't meant for you?

Are there hours of operation? No!

I am calling the city to let them know that Hiawatha can be just as big of a revenue source as Admiral Way and the West Seattle Bridge bus lane!

Keep your dogs out of Hiawatha!

("chilax" is not a good response unless you provide your address so my dog can "chilax" in your front yard)

Are you talking about the sports field, or the park in general??

  4. I walk my dog around the park most every day because it is one of the few parks where there are rarely off-leash dogs! and I have never seen any dogs on the playfield ever..

  5. SMC 18.12.080

Except as expressly allowed in subsection B (off leash parks) hereof, it is unlawful for
any person to allow or permit any dog or other pet to run at large in any
park, OR to permit any dog or other pet WITH or WITHOUT a leash, except
Seeing Eye or Hearing Ear dogs or dogs used by public law enforcement
agencies and under control of a law enforcement officer, to enter any public
beach, swimming or wading area, pond, fountain, stream, ORGANIZED ATHLETICS area or designated CHILDREN'S PLAY AREA.
The Superintendent may ban dogs and
other pets, or a specific dog or other pet, from areas of any park where he
or she determines the same may be a nuisance.

Every day I was at Hiawatha this summer, I saw dogs at the play areas and on the organized athletic fields.. also saw this at Bar S and Whale Tail/Alki field.

I've emailed this guy numerous times .. donald.baxter@seattle.gov

    Good luck!

  6. right now those who break the law are getting away with it because there isn't enough money for enforcement.

every time i walk my dogs (on leash) i encounter someone who thinks the laws don't apply to them.

some are smart enough to leash their dogs when i tell them that one of mine is not dog friendly...

but some take a look at the size of my dog and think it's not a threat...
or at me and decide that i am just a fussy little old lady who is afraid she can't control her dog.

more than once, i have been bitten putting my body between approaching dogs with stupid owners and my dog.

or.. between my other dog and stupid people who reach down to pet a dog they have just been told it not people friendly.

For those who don't know.. that means the owner thinks it's really possible that their dog will bite you.

Every time you walk your dog off leash where there are other dogs, you risk your dog bolting after a squirrel or cat or another dog and being injured.

Every time you walk your dog off leash you risk your dog injuring someone else or another dog.

Is it really worth the risk to assume that the other dog owner is willing to put their body between yours and the dog they told you would just as soon sink her fangs into your dog's jugular?

Or that your dog won't hurt another person or dog badly enough to require putting them down..

not to mention the medical fees.

I just paid over a thousand in medical bills for someone who entered my yard without permission and blithely sailed through two marked gates to encounter my dog in my back yard... and then stupidly put their hand down to get bitten.

    Because it's really simple
You think you are exercising rights that you don't have...
but the truth is that you are putting yourself, your dog and your bank account at risk every time you enter public space without leashing your dog.

it really is all about you
and the sooner you figure that out the better off you will be.

  7. JoB,

I agree with most of what you say but I have to ask you, having owned a lab who disliked runners, postmen and bicyclists, when you are walking your on-leash dog who is not dog/people friendly do you use a muzzle? I eventually had to do this with our lab because crossing the street, giving warnings was not enough (and when runners/bicyclists came up from behind everyone was surprised) but you as a responsible on-leash dog owner have to take responsibility for bringing an unsocialized/fearful dog out into public venues as well.

  8. jwws..

i take full responsibility for both of my leashed dogs when I take them into public.

i even took responsibility for my dog when he was in his own backyard behind two posted gates.

    I rescued them both
and I am responsible for them both.

    as for that muzzle...
i know that my dogs have issues
so we don't visit public spaces where a quick hand won't be enough to function as an emergency muzzle.

    i did mention i had been bitten didn't I?
