Help Please: Food Needs for Nickelsville-5/22/11

  1. Hey everybody, just wanted to put out a request for some food needs at Nickelsville.

The Kitchen Co-ordinators tell me that what is most needed now are sandwich fixin's; bread, peanut butter, jelly, Spam, other potted meat products, etc.

Please remember, that we have no refrigeration, so please no perishable stuff, or stuff that needs refrigeration after opening, such as the Costco 55 gallon drums of mayo.

Also, until we get a dumpster, ripe or nearly ripe fruits should probably not be donated either at this time.

Any and all donations are greatly appreciated, of course, but we don't want anyone's generosity to go to waste.

    Thanks again to everyone!

Hey Mike, are there usually folks available in the parking lot? JoB tells me I'd have a hard time hauling my crippled knee down to you-all, but I've been collecting some things in my car. Lemme know best way.

  3. Hi Charla,

Not anyone usually hanging around the parking lot per se, unless they are using the facilities, or entering/leaving the camp.

I'm trying to recall line of site, but you may not be visible to anyone in camp unless you could make it to the top of the berm (then back down!).

I don't recall your e-mail addy, but if you don't mind posting it here, I'll give you my cell number.
I'm online until about 2:30 when my time runs out, and don't expect to be back at camp until 3:30 or so.

There's always plenty of unload help available, although we have a 4:00 pm meeting today that some will attend, including, likely, myself, and a mandatory for everyone 6:00 pm meeting.

So if you want to plan a time, let me know, otherwise if you happen to find yourself in the area, ring me up and if I'm around I'll meet you in the parking lot.

    Thanks!

  4. Mike, perishable food may be OK - as long as it it is delivered close to meal time. Tandy and I have some things in our deep freeze that we would like to bring.
    .
Charlabob, if you know Mike's phone number, great, if not a few persistent honks on you car horn will likely get the attention of someone. There is about a six foot high berm that separates the camp from the parking lot.
    .
Mike S - you have been there a week now, with great weather. Would you be willing to tell us about your first night with rain? I would imagine camp to be kind of muddy at the moment. I hope you are staying warm and dry!

  5. Kevin, Yeah, we discussed the possibility of accepting perishable foods and using them "right away". My fear was getting an onslaught of perishibles, and some of it going to waste.

I probably should not make any actual decison on that possibilty, leaving that for the Kitchen Co-Ordinators and/or Arbitrators to decide. I don't want to overstep my boundries. Maybe if you come by in the next couple of days or so, and ask to talk to either of the above mentioned, something could be worked out for a future drop off of perishibles.

As far as my first rainy night story; nothing too eventful, just dreading with each little pitter pat of rain that I hadn't (at the time) put the one tarp over my tent, and hoping I didn't bump the tent fabric causing a torrential downpour in the tent, of the accumulated water!

We just picked up a donation of pet food...do any of the residents have pets that need food?

  7. The other Nicklesville thread said they had recently had a large petfood donation and none was needed at this time.

  8. cross posted...
"it's the end of the month
and the end of the month affects the Nickelsville the same way it hits the rest of us..
money.. especially for food.. gets pretty tight.

they are always grateful for food donations..
but they are in particular need right now.

they are still in the process of putting their kitchen together for communal meals
so right now canned food donations in smaller sizes are preferable to bulk canned goods...

although they are making beans for a camp dinner tonight..
with everyone busy trying to put the camp together..
most meals are somewhat individual right now... thus the need for smaller sized containers.

    without refrigeration...
opening bulk sized containers can lead to food waste...
and one of their kitchen coordinators is an old Sargent who gets very upset over waste.

Anything you can drop off that will survive without refrigeration is appreciated. "

  11. To whoever dropped the bags of groceries by my front porch today...

I want to thank you for delivering the makings for fajitas or mexican stew..
but since hubby is unlikely to agree to eat only mexican stew for a month..
i took them down to Nickelsville this afternoon ;->

seriously, i assumed that was your intention.
I just hope you didn't expect me to cook them first :(

whoever you are... i think you have made some very cold and wet people happy tonight
and have done an excellent job of being anonymous...
you are not any of the three people i thought knew where i lived
and when to drop stuff by without being caught.

Next time feel free to drop donations by the camp..
they are very nice down there...

as much as i like being known as a very nice woman
i don't like taking credit for someone else's act of kindness..
and no matter how many times i told them i found the stuff on the porch
i don't think they believed it wasn't me.

  12. I am sure that the person who dropped food by my front porch yesterday had good intentions...
and yesterday when i thought i knew who had done so i was only mildly irritated at needing to get out of my bed to deliver them.

Now that i am pretty sure it wasn't someone I know well..
i find that this isn't so amusing.

I know in this internet age personal privacy is mostly an illusion
so i am not as careful as hubby would like about keeping my identity "anonymous"
but like everyone else.. i cling to my illusions.

I like to think of my home as a place where I am free from the public glare
and yesterday's drop-off.. no matter how well intentioned...
violated the privacy of my home.

the thing is that i would have been much more comfortable with this if the person who dropped those groceries off had rung my bell and simply asked me not to reveal their identity.

Please don't drop things off on my front porch for Nickelsville or any other cause without my express invitation.

You are all welcome at Nickelsville.

  14. furryfaces,

Sorry I didn't respond to you yesterday.

I would suggest, until Nicelsvilles is again in need of pet food, that you donate any that can't be kept until that time, to the Weat Seattle Food Bank. (And probably White Center as well).

I know many times I was at WSFB, and they had no pet food for their clients with pets. Thanks!
