Help ID Giant Potato Beetle?

  1. Any beetle experts out there who can ID a beetle that looks almost exactly like a Colorado Potato Beetle, except is a full 2 inches long, not counting legs? About 1 inch wide, with a hairy mid-section. Also, when we brushed it off a freshly planted flower, it started hissing at us. Creepy. Don't have a good picture of it to post, but if you Google Colorado Potato Beetle, it looks similar. Just four times as big, and an order of magnitude creepier.

    hissing beetle pictures

there's one picture about 1/2 way down on the left that says it was take/found in Burien (big with white stripes). And, yes, they are definitely creepy...

  4. That's the one. Good detective work JanS. I can definitely say that it's docile. They just hang on window screens or plants for hours without budging. Good to know they have a nasty bite though. Thanks!

  5. Oh my goodness! I've had one of these on my screen door for almost a week now. It scares a bejezuz out of me so I've just avoided it! Thanks for the posting so I know what it is :)
