I went to the tulip festival last weekend and picked up some lily and dahlia bulbs and for some reason my cat keep trying to eat them. They are still in the bag which I've tried to hide but he keeps finding them. I haven't planted them yet because I'm afraid he's just going to dig them up and eat them. Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to keep him away from them?

Try putting a little hot sauce (the hotter the better) on the bulbs/bag - stopped my neighbor's cat from using my side yard as a litter box.

I was going to suggest red pepper flakes or a smear of minty toothpaste.

I have the same issue with my cat liking the smell of bulbs when they're -in the bag-. I think it's the wood shavings or something about the smell of them that they like. Kinda like cat nip. Anyway - once they're planted under the ground I've never had a problem with them getting dug up. (Except by squirrels!)

You might try putting mesh over the bulbs after you plant them to be sure your cat doesn't dig them up. I recently learned that some types of lilies are toxic to cats, as noted in this earlier thread:

Yes - LILIES and Dahlias are poisonous to cats! Wherever you plant them, you'll want to ensure that your cats (or even neighbors' cats) can't get to them.

Have you ASKED the cat not to eat the bulbs? ;-) ....sorry, couldn't resist...
