Okay, so I just got done watching the documentary, "Earthlings" and I know now that I should be more conscientious of at least what my family and I eat. I am going to admit I'm not turning vegetarian or anything. Although, pork may never see the inside of my belly ever again. But I would like to know more about open/free range and grass fed animals and where to purchase these types of products. I know this doesn't exactly change the fact that these animals are still subjected to the horrors of slaughterhouses, but I don't feel I can support the pallets of chicken thighs that are sold in bulk at big warehouse and grocery stores.

If there are any local grocery stores that sell more open/free range and grass fed meats and poultry, please advise!

    Thank you!

Katherine - Thank you, PCC is now on my list. I figured Trader Joes too. Being that I'm not dropping red meat entirely, is there a local butcher or something where I may find grass fed cattle?

I suppose going organic in general is a good start as well?

Try the Swinery on California Avenue - they have fantastic meats and can tell you exactly where the animals came from and slaughter some of their own in the back of the shop.

Good for you, F16CrewChief - welcome to the tribe of selective omnivores!

the sunday farmer's market is a good source.

once you taste farm raised humanely slaughtered meat you aren't likely to settle for less

Thank you all. My wife tonight could not bring herself to eat any meat after watching Earthlings. It was a tough movie to watch. I struggle with the word "slaughter", but suppose there is no other way to describe how we get our food. PCC definitely sounds like a new destination for us.

F16, PCC does concentrate on local if available. The meat says where it comes from and you can get an explanation of how it's raised. As it's a member run co-op, you can have input on what kind of food they buy and where they get it.

  10. I would suggest going with either the Swinery or the WS Farmers Market. PCC does buy local meat, but there is no guarantee that the birds are treated humanely. I've seen a few of the big local operations, including one of the organic operations, and it would surprise you at what is still allowed. Technically, it is more humane that a conventional mega producer, but it doesn't meet my standard of humane.

Whole Foods Market? There is a store on Westlake. About 10 miles.
