For the past two days I have seen a beautiful hawk or eagle circling around the high point pond, then diving into the pond to attempt to get something. I am trying to figure out what kind of bird/hawk/eagle this is. Has anyone seen it who knows? I think it might be an osprey, but am not certain. It comes out around 7PM, circles for a few minutes, dives into the pond, then leaves. It is beautiful, appears to be dark brown with white and brown/white stripes on the underside. I am going to try to get a picture of it next time. I'd love to know what it is, and I do hope to see it on a regular basis.

  2. I have seen this bird a couple of times and would really like to know what it is as well. Today we saw it circle around and finally catch something. So nice to see this kind of thing in our "backyard" here in Highpoint.

That sounds like an osprey to me, both appearance and behavior. A couple pictures:

This video shows flight and the call they make, which is pretty distinctive:

There are several active osprey nests along the Duwamish River, and the ospreys from them frequently work the saltwater shoreline. Makes sense that at least one would be checking out freshwater possibilities, too.

I bet you are right! The first picture looks exactly like it! Thanks. I hope it continues to make appearances.

  5. It is a Great Blue Heron. It sometimes sleeps on the spit in the pond, but usually in one of the taller trees in the area. We've even seen it fly at night. It usually leaves the pond area by 10 am to go be in the trees somewhere, it is there very early in the morning.

wendyhj - I've seen that bird too, that is not the same bird but is beautiful! Thanks for sharing the photo. This one is definitely a hawk or eagle. I am fairly sure now it is an osprey. I love seeing the heron too.

  7. Thanks for the photo herongrrrl, I believe that it is an osprey as well. I have seen the heron as well, most recently this week I saw it perched on top of one of the houses against a beautiful sunset!

Finally got some pics of it from a camera other than my phone! Definitely an osprey.
